Partnership with Habitat is Turning Blighted Properties into Quality Affordable Housing
The transformation has begun.
On a recent morning, Chesterfield’s Community Enhancement Department joined volunteers and staff with Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity in clearing out a nearly 3,000-square-foot house on Sheldeb Drive – the first step in preparing it for renovation and eventual resale as part of the county’s affordable housing inventory.
Chesterfield finally acquired the property in June 2024, two years after the Board of Supervisors declared it blighted and five years after Community Enhancement staff first issued notices of violation to owners of the vacant, unsecured home off Buford Road in Bon Air.
Last August, the board conveyed the property to Richmond Habitat, which will complete the extensive renovation project with plans to sell it to a family that makes no more than 80% of Area Median Income.

Resources and Useful Information
Connect with a 9-1-1 Dispatcher Using Prepared Live
Heads up, Chesterfield! The county's Emergency Communications Center (ECC) has launched Prepared Live.
This software enables the 9-1-1 dispatch center to receive live streams, multimedia and location information from mobile callers in real time. It greatly improves situational awareness for first responders and ensures that appropriate resources are dispatched to handle emergencies.
Participation in video during a call is completely voluntary and consent of the caller is required. If the caller consents, they will receive a livestream link via text from the dispatcher, enabling them to activate live video upon click.
It’s also important to note that the video call function does not provide Chesterfield ECC with access to the contents or settings of a caller’s phone.
To learn more about this technology and how it can benefit you in an emergency, visit the county website.
