Board of Supervisors Approves Real Estate Tax Rate Reduction, Adopts FY26 Budget
The Chesterfield Board of Supervisors voted last Wednesday, April 9 to adopt the county’s general fund budget for fiscal year 2026, which totals $1.04 billion and balances a diverse set of tax relief measures with continued investment in the priorities of education and public safety.
The board also approved a 1-cent reduction in the real estate tax rate, to 89 cents per $100 of assessed value. It’s the fourth consecutive year the rate has been cut; it has fallen by 6 cents since FY21 and is now the lowest in Chesterfield’s modern history.
Along with last year’s historic reduction in the personal property tax rate, a 5% credit on real estate tax bills due in June, an additional $5 million allocated to tax relief for the elderly and disabled, and expanding relief for small businesses, the board remains mindful of the impact of rising costs, interest rate volatility and overall economic uncertainty on household budgets.

Annual Battle of the Books Brings Readers Together
Leading into National School Library Month this April, teams of fifth-grade students from more than 20 elementary schools across Chesterfield County got in formation for the annual Battle of the Books.
This fun and friendly competition encourages students to celebrate and appreciate language arts while engaging with their school libraries.
In a quiz bowl format, school teams buzz in to answer questions about twenty different books selected by elementary school librarians near the end of the previous school year. Students spend an entire year working hard to prepare by reading, taking quizzes and practicing with their teams.
There are no big cash prizes and no hard feelings. When the points are totaled, the battlers and their classmates know it’s all to celebrate the love of reading and each other.
