Plaques Honoring Service of Current and Former Sheriffs Unveiled at 1917 Courthouse
During a ceremony last Thursday, April 3 at the Historic 1917 Courthouse, Chesterfield unveiled a series of plaques bearing the names and years of service for all current and past sheriffs.
In 1749, John Archer was appointed by Virginia Gov. Sir William Gooch to serve as the first sheriff of Chesterfield County. The responsibilities of the sheriff were described in the Proclamation of Peace as “bringing to court persons who broke the peace or suspected of breaking the law.” The sheriff was also tasked with providing security to judges, the courthouse and the jail.
“The story of the sheriff begins long before the founding of America, long before the lore of the American wild west and long before our own 276-year history,” said Sheriff Karl Leonard, the 64th person elected to serve as the county's sheriff. “It’s one of the most enduring figures in law enforcement, the sheriff, with centuries of service as guardians of justice and order.”

Staff from the county’s Planning Department are hosting a series of community meetings this month, beginning Thursday, April 10 at Providence Elementary School, to provide information about the current draft of ZOMod and answer questions. Meet Trogdor
Hey everybody! My name is Trogdor and I am a 2-year-old neutered male Pitbull Mix who weighs about 52lbs! I'm a very sweet pup and I love playing on and laying on nice soft couches! My favorite things are running, playing, squeaky toys and food! I'm good with other dogs that I met at the shelter, but I'm pretty dominant so I do best around calmer/submissive dogs. I will admit, I'm not the best on a leash, but I'm sure if you have tasty treats, you could teach me how to me!
If you are interested in meeting this pet, please contact Chesterfield County Animal Services at 804-748-1683, option "2," to schedule an appointment. Office staff are available by phone 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays. Our shelter is located at 9300 Public Works Road.
