Chesterfield Completes Acquisition of Property Along Appomattox River
Through a regional partnership many years in the making, the Capital Region Land Conservancy (CRLC) has transferred ownership of more than 42 acres of land and islands along the Appomattox River to Chesterfield County and the nonprofit Friends of the Lower Appomattox River (FOLAR).
CRLC purchased the partially wooded property, which includes 16 islands and multiple ruins of former mills, canals, and dams, from its longtime owners Josh and Ingrid Greenwood for $2.4 million in 2022.
The acquisition was made possible by $1.7 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding from Chesterfield as a long-term investment that will have far-reaching positive impacts on residents’ quality of life. It’s part of an ongoing initiative by the Board of Supervisors and county administration to leverage Chesterfield’s river frontage as a public amenity by creating multiple access points for recreational uses.

Cutting-Edge Tech Enhances ECC's Ability to Engage Effectively With a Diverse Population
As Chesterfield’s population grows increasingly diverse, the county’s Emergency Communications Center (ECC) remains on the cutting edge of technology that enables its employees to engage effectively with a wide variety of 911 callers and quickly dispatch appropriate resources.
Last July, the ECC began using a new service, the Volatia Language Network, that provides translation of more than 300 different languages into English, as well as video sign language interpretation via computer or tablet.
“These services have really made it so much easier and increased our speed in getting people the help they need,” said Tommy Tucker, director of Chesterfield's ECC. “It’s amazing that we can have this back and forth and quickly go through all of our questions so we can dispatch the right resources.”

It's Pizza Time!
My name is Pizza Pie and I'm happy, excitable, and very food motivated. I love life and am not afraid to show it. At the young age of 2, I still act like a puppy at times. The shelter staff calls me silly and fun-loving. With a little bit of treat rewards, I will learn new tricks quickly. I met other dogs here at the shelter and really want to play. I can be a bit jumpy, so I may do best in a home without very small children.
If you are interested in meeting this pet, please contact Chesterfield County Animal Services at 804-748-1683, option "2," to schedule an appointment. Office staff are available by phone 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays. Our shelter is located at 9300 Public Works Road.
