Greetings Dear! Here's the scoop on what's happening this month at Augusta County Parks and Recreation. This report gives you information on our featured activities and programs of the month so that you can stay up to date! Fall Movie night is here! Come early to check out bats from the Bat Conservation & Rescue of Virginia! Or visit with snakes from the Wildlife Center! It will be chilly, so warm up with a warm brownie sundae from Branch's Soft serve or with dinner from Battarbees! The movie starts at sundown, roughly 7pm. Bring your own blankets and chairs!

Urbanna Oyster Festival                             All Ages

The Town of Urbanna is a true oyster town and the best place to taste, buy and try all things oyster related. The Urbanna Oyster Festival was designated as the “official” oyster festival of the Commonwealth in 1988. Good times and a variety of delicious food, art and craft exhibits and lively music are planned for the tens of thousands of visitors. Bring your appetite! An array of foods will be available from more than 40 vendors. The honored oyster is featured in a variety of presentations - raw, roasted, fried, steamed, frittered and stewed. This is a walking pay-as-you-go festival. Fee includes transportation.
Register by October 20.

Virginia Holocaust Museum                     Ages 50+

The Virginia Holocaust Museum collection consists of objects, documents, photographs, digital files, and oral histories related to the Holocaust (1933-1945) and World War II (1939-1945). Although these two periods are the focus of the collection, the museum also collects objects from prior to the Holocaust and WWII if they are related to local survivors and liberators, or to events that contributed to the Holocaust. The collection also encompasses artifacts related to the aftermath of these periods, including but not limited to the Nuremberg Trials, Displaced Persons Camps and emigration out of Europe. After the tour we will walk to Station 2 for lunch. Fee includes tour and transportation. Register by November 1.

Winterfest Kings Dominion                           All Ages

WinterFest will be the perfect place to create holiday memories with your family with so many exclusive experiences. The park will transform into a winter wonderland with millions of shimmering lights, breathtaking décor, and lavish displays. Sit back and enjoy one of their live shows while dining on delicious holiday treats and drinks. Take part in a selection of fun holiday activities to get you in the holiday spirit and be sure to check out their selection of festive shops and artisan locations to find the perfect holiday gift.  Fee includes transportation and admission. Bizarre Bazaar                                               Ages 50+

Enjoy holiday shopping for your family and friends at the bizarre. The bazaar is a Virginia tradition for over 47 years, with unique offerings that include seasonal gifts and decorative accessories for the home and garden, gourmet food and cookbooks, fine linens, designer women's and children's clothing, toys, fine crafts and artwork, furniture and jewelry. With over 475 exhibitors, you are sure to find some treasures! Fee includes admission and transportation. Register by November 21.

Zoo Lights                                                       All Ages

When you first arrive, enjoy all the animals the zoo has to offer before they head off to bed. Then after the sun goes down, watch as the zoo transforms into a wonderful display of lights. As you walk on the paths around the zoo take in the beautiful displays, enjoy live music and indulge in tasty treats throughout the night. Fee includes transportation.

Holiday Tea at The Jefferson Hotel           Ages 50+

Enjoy the holiday tea among all the wonderful decorations. The hotel will be adorned with hundreds of live poinsettias, thousands of twinkle lights, hundreds of yards of garland and dozens of wreaths. Signature displays will be created throughout the hotel including the annual gingerbread house. Fee includes transportation and holiday tea.

Winter Wonder Trail                                    All Ages

The beauty of light and the whimsy of nature intertwine harmoniously in The Winter Wander Trail at Boar’s Head Resort. Behold the magic of nature during this illuminated lakeside stroll as an extraordinary palette of colorful illuminations blanket the natural surroundings for a magical show of lights like no other. Fee includes transportation and admission.

Kids' Test Kitchen                                   Ages 12-17

Kids’ Test Kitchen is on a mission to get young eaters cooking, tasting and thinking about healthy ingredients! Each class presents participants with an opportunity to explore new or familiar foods in the raw, un-manipulated state. Then, with adult supervision and occasional assistance, we will work together virtually to slice, dice, peel, measure and cook until we have each prepared the finished dish. The virtual   experience gives students the unique opportunity to gain comfort and independence within their own kitchen and then immediately share their work with family! Parents love having the night off from planning and preparation and agree that coming together as a family to enjoy the product of their kid’s labor is priceless. A team of Registered Dietitians plans the menus that have previous included: Nourishing Nachos, Comfort Stew, Creamy Tomato Tortellini Soup, Homemade Ricotta and stuffed shells, Potato Gnocchi, Crepes and so much more! Fee includes instruction only. Prior to the first night of class, guardians will be emailed an ingredient list and instructions on how to log in for class. Instructor is Kids’ Test Kitchen facilitators. Register at least one week before start of class.

Sporting Clays Learn-To-Shoot                  Ages 8+

Never shot clay targets and want to try? Come out to The Flying Rabbit Sporting Clays in Mount Crawford to learn the basics of sporting clay shooting! Participants will learn the basic fundamentals of clay target shooting including safe firearm handling, proper stance and gun mount. Cost includes instruction, gun rental, ammunition and clays. Please dress for the weather (wear layers if possible); class will go on during light rain, but will be cancelled for heavy rain or lightening. All equipment and safety gear will be provided. Any participant under age 18 must have a parent present at all times. Instructor is Danny Harding or Tracy Harding. Register at least one week before start of class

Community Education

NRA Firearm Safety                                      Ages 18+

This is a five-hour course for safe gun handling that is conducted in the classroom only. Students are taught NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling, primary causes of firearms accidents, firearm parts, how to load and unload certain action types, ammunition components, cleaning, care, safe storage of firearms and ammunition and the benefits of becoming an active participant in the shooting sports. Students will receive a course completion certificate. Safety comes before all else. This class will meet requirements for the Virginia Concealed Carry Permit. Instructor also has extensive knowledge of the Criminal and Civil Liabilities pertaining to CCW Permit holders while carrying concealed and if you are forced to defend yourself with your firearm. Please do not bring guns to class. Instructor is Jim Wood, NRA Certified Instructor.
Register at least one week before start of class.

The Other Dementias                                   Ages 18+

This class will provide an overview of the various types of dementia beyond Alzheimer’s, including information about dementias such as Lewy Body, Pick’s Disease, Vascular and Parkinsonian. Participants will also be provided information related to dementias that occur as a result of substance abuse or other health disorders. The focus will be on the communication, behaviors and management related to the various dementias. Instructor is Sharon DeBoever. Register by November 8.

Acrylic Pour Painting                                  Ages 14+

Have you ever wondered how to do an acrylic paint pour? This technique is something anyone can do. Join us for a fun way to create one of a kind works of art, as each piece is an original. Participants will complete a 4x4 ceramic tile and 12x12 canvas. All supplies are provided. Please wear old clothes and bring a snack and drink to class. Instructor is Diane Ricketson with Paint4FUN®️™️. Register by November 13.

Supporting Dementia for the Holidays     Ages 18+

Holidays are a time for family, but what if a member of the family has some form of dementia? This program will provide some helpful tips on what to do and what to avoid to assist the individual who has dementia enjoy the holidays. Instructor is Sharon DeBoever. Register by November 29.
