Arlington Public Health Expands HIV Prevention Services with PrEP

Arlington Public Health, part of the Arlington County Department of Human Services, is expanding access to HIV prevention services through the addition of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP).

PrEP is a medication that helps prevent HIV in people who are HIV-negative. When taken as prescribed, PrEP is up to 99% effective at preventing HIV through sexual contact. PrEP is for anyone who may benefit from additional protection against HIV and is considered a cornerstone of modern HIV prevention efforts.

“PrEP is one of the most effective tools available to prevent HIV, yet many people who could benefit from it still face barriers to access,” said Deidra D. Parrish, MD, MPH&TM, Health Director for Arlington Public Health. “By adding PrEP to our services, we're expanding access to proven HIV prevention and making it easier for community members to get the care, information, and support they need to stay healthy in Arlington.”

Through its STI and Family Planning Clinic, Arlington Public Health now offers daily oral PrEP (generic Truvada), HIV and STI testing, prevention counseling, same-day medication pickup for eligible patients, ongoing monitoring and follow-up care, and connections to additional sexual health services.

The addition of PrEP expands Arlington County's local HIV prevention services and helps reduce barriers to care by providing prevention medication, testing, counseling, and ongoing support in one place. The service is designed to improve access for people who may face challenges navigating the healthcare system or getting preventive care.

PrEP services are available regardless of where a person lives, immigration status, or health insurance status. You do not have to live in Arlington to receive PrEP services from Arlington Public Health. You also do not need health insurance to get PrEP. Arlington County offers services on a sliding fee scale. You may qualify for reduced- or no-cost services. Healthcare referrals and self-referrals are accepted for PrEP services.

PrEP is for anyone who wants extra protection from HIV, especially those at increased risk and those seeking HIV prevention services.

“We want community members to know that PrEP is available and accessible,” said Lilibeth Grandas, RN, BSN, MSN, Nursing Supervisor for Arlington Public Health's HIV/STD Prevention Program. “Our goal is to meet people where they are and provide the prevention, education, and support they need to make informed decisions about their health.”
