Board Adopts Zoning Changes, Making It Easier to Install EV Chargers

This June, the County Board approved updates to the Arlington County Zoning Ordinance that remove barriers to installing electric vehicle (EV) chargers across the County. The changes:

• Allow EV chargers in setback areas, the strips of land near property lines that normally have to stay clear of buildings and structures;
• Allow EV chargers in every zoning district, including residential, commercial and industrial areas;
• Establish a new, clearly defined type of parking space designed to accommodate EV charging & supply equipment, along with the rules for how it can be used;
• Count a standard space with Level 2 or Level 3 charging as 1.5 spaces toward a site's parking requirements; and
• Update the definition of parking space so that spaces used only for EV charging now count towards required parking.
