New to the Public Art Collection

This anniversary year, we unveiled four new artworks that are now part of Arlington’s Public Art Collection: Present Pastimes by Olalekan Jeyifous in Ballston; Christ in Blessing by Louis Comfort Tiffany Studios in Ballston; Compassion by Una Hanbury with Colin Poole in Courthouse; and West Glebe Flow by Vicki Scuri along Four Mile Run.

40th Anniversary of Dark Star Park

In partnership with the Rosslyn Business Improvement District (BID), we celebrated Dark Star Park Day on August 1, 2024, including an official County Board proclamation and the debut of a new poem by Courtney LeBlanc, Arlington County’s third Poet Laureate, commissioned to honor Dark Star Park and the work of artist Nancy Holt. We also gave away 200 limited–edition commemorative posters designed and printed by Globe Collection and Press at MICA. 

Public Art Awareness Campaign

In celebration of Arlington’s 40th Anniversary, we launched an awareness campaign to inform current and future audiences about who we are, what we do and how we do it. This includes an FAQ video produced by Arlington TV and an updated Public Art Walking Tour map.

Affordable Housing Artist in Residence

The 2024 IMPACT Arts Residency was developed jointly with Arlington Public Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington, and Wesley Housing to serve the residents of The Cadence. Growing Together: The Forest of Us is the culmination of artist Lianna Zaragoza’s collaboration with Cadence community members to create a mural inspired by natural spaces throughout Arlington County.

John Robinson, Jr. Town Square (FREED) is a 2024 CODAawards Merit Winner in the Landscape category. Fire Lines by artists David and Eli Hess received a 2023 DESIGNArlington Merit Award and Wheelhouse by Mark Reigelman at Jennie Dean Park received an Honorable Mention.
