In late September, County crews installed the temporary bus platform pilot project at S Glebe Rd & S Old Glebe Rd. This intersection was identified during the Glebe Rd High-Injury Network safety audit for pedestrian safety and risk of angle crashes. During the pilot, we will evaluate safety impacts by collecting speed, yield rate, and bus stop observation data, as well as community feedback. We will use the before/after data and community input to inform a longer-term condition for the intersection.

Fort Myer Dr. and EB Langston Blvd Pilot was identified in the 2019 crash hot spot analyses with a history of pedestrian crashes. The safety pilot that launched in 2021 had short term positive impacts. In 2024, a southbound left turn crash pattern prompted review and adjustment to the 2021 pilot condition. In fall 2024, we separated the pedestrian crosswalk phase from the conflicting southbound turning movements. We are continuing to monitor this intersection to ensure the pilot condition improves safety for all modes. The County has also planned a capital project to upgrade the traffic signal and improve the curbs in coordination with the Gateway Park Project.

In September 2024, Arlington’s Vision Zero program manager and Arlington Police’s automated traffic safety specialist attended a national Safe System Approach peer exchange hosted by the Federal Highway Administration in Denver, CO.
The event included Vision Zero and transportation safety staff from 12 communities around the US. The meeting included discussion on speed management strategies, innovative safety projects, equitable community outreach on safety, critical crash rapid response, effective policy changes, and other approaches to reach a common goal of Vision Zero. Attendees participated in a safety walk audit and a bike tour to see Denver’s Vision Zero work in real life. Arlington is incredibly thankful to have had this opportunity to learn from our talented peer cities and look forward to bringing lessons learned home to Arlington!
