Traffic Changes on Columbia Pike East End

As part of the Arlington National Cemetery Defense Access Roads (DAR) Project by the Federal Highway Administration, Columbia Pike between South Nash Street and South  Joyce Street will reopen in its new alignment, starting roughly the week of September 16, or as the FHWA allows.

Please note that while Columbia Pike is reopening, the Arlington National Cemetery expansion construction will still be ongoing.

Here's What's Changing

  • Columbia Pike has been straightened to connect with South Joyce Street closer to the I-395 overpass
  • Southgate Road will close to vehicular access east of South Oak Street
  • Pedestrian access will remain in place along the stone wall on Southgate Road to connect to the Washington Boulevard Side Path
  • Pedestrian/bike access will open on the south side of Columbia Pike

Bus access on Columbia Pike between South Orme Street and Army Navy Drive will remain closed while the sidewalk on the north side of Columbia Pike is still under construction.

Pedestrian, bike and transit access on this segment of Columbia Pike are expected to be fully open in late 2024.

County Road Construction Still Ongoing

Construction on Columbia Pike as part of Arlington County's Multimodal Street Improvements project west of South Oak Street is still underway, with anticipated completion in late 2025.
