Critical Crash Mitigation Campaign: Take the Vision Zero Quiz

Vision Zero Quiz

Could you pass drivers ed class today? Take the Vision Zero quiz to find out! Arlington County is constantly adding new roadway safety tools to make our streets safer for everyone. Whether you walk, bike, drive, ride, scoot, or roll, it’s important to know what these treatments are and how they apply to you. Take this quick quiz to test your knowledge of new and old rules of the road.

Share Your Feedback: Centerline Hardening Pilot Locations

Centerline Hardening

Centerline hardening is a safety tool for slowing turning vehicles and increasing visibility of pedestrians at intersections. Arlington has been piloting centerline hardening in five locations around the county this past spring/summer.

  • Clarendon Blvd at N Rhodes St (south side)
  • Fairfax Blvd at N Randolph St (north and south side)
  • Columbia Pike at S Dinwiddie St (east and west sides)
  • Columbia Pike at S Four Mile Run Dr (west and north sides)
  • Shirlington Blvd & S Kenmore St/24th Rd S (all sides)

In addition to collecting data at these intersections, your input will help us identify next steps for the pilot. Please share your feedback by Wed, Sept 25. We look forward to hearing from you!

Save the date - October 24 (7pm-9pm) External Stakeholder Group Community Meeting

Please join us for our mid-year meeting of the Vision Zero External Stakeholder Group. The meeting will be held virtually from 7pm-9pm on October 24, 2024. All members of the community are welcome to attend and participate.

Community Pop-ups Update

VZ Community Popups

In the past month, the Vision Zero team has been out at various events meeting community members! We set up at the Arlington County Fair and 3rd Annual Hispanic Heritage Community Festival. The team handed out swag like t-shirts and car magnets, as well as brochures outlining steps to take if you are involved in a crash and guidance on obtaining and installing a car seat. Thanks to everyone who was able to make it out!

Look out for a pop up later this year about pedestrian safety in dark conditions!

Annual Feedback Engagement Summay

The County would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who participated in the 2024 Annual Safety Feedback Engagement! There were 860+ online, 10+ mail-in, and 640+ in-person interactions (including family events, food distribution events, an event at a high school, and a community walking tour) where we were able to collect valuable feedback on road safety in Arlington. Your participation and feedback help to make Arlington a safer place to live, work and play.

Automated Enforcement Reminder: PhotoSPEED and PhotoRED

speed camera warning sign that reads "Traffic laws photo enforced"

Arlington’s PhotoSPEED Program speed safety cameras are now live at the ten school zone locations. Starting Sept 25, 2024, tickets and fines will be enforced. There will be warning signs posted 1,000 feet in advance of each camera location. These cameras have been found to decrease speeding by 50% and reduce serious injury crashes by 35%.

Additionally, the first four Red-Light Safety Cameras of Arlington’s PhotoRED program have been installed. The final two red light cameras will go live on Oct. 3, 2024, at the following locations.

  • WB Wilson Blvd at N Lynn St and NB N Lynn St at Wilson Blvd
  • WB Langston Blvd at EB I-66 Exit 72 Offramp

Red-light safety cameras have been found to reduce all injury crashes up to 25%.

Tool Spotlight: Hardened Centerlines and Turn Wedges

Hardening Centerline tools

Hardened centerlines are small, raised bumps placed along the yellow centerline at an intersection. Turn wedges are like hardened centerlines but are placed between the sides of perpendicular cross walks. Both tools are designed to make intersections safer for pedestrians by encouraging drivers to make left turns at slower speeds.

Safety Benefits include:

  • Slows left-turning vehicles without reducing traffic capacity
  • Guides vehicles to turn wider for safer more predictable turns
  • Increase visibility of pedestrians in crosswalk

Annual Crash Report Correction

We published our annual crash report in July. Since publication, we corrected a mapping error for intersection and angle crashes. There is a new updated version on the website.
