The March 5, 2024 Dual Presidential Primary Election is just a few days away! Below are seven things to know for the upcoming election:
1. Dual Presidential Party Primary – Both the Democratic Party and Republican Party will have primaries on the same day. In a dual primary, voters will be asked if they want to vote in the Democratic or Republican Primary. Virginia is an open primary state meaning voters do not register by party. Any registered voter in Virginia is eligible to vote in either primary. Voters must choose which party ballot they wish to vote, and they can only vote in one primary. (VA Code 24.2-530). Voting in a party’s primary does not mean that the voter will be “registered” with that party.
2. What's on the ballot – Sample ballots for each party primary can be seen here.
3. Who can vote – All registered voters in Arlington are eligible to vote in this election. If you missed the registration deadline, you may register in-person at an Early Voting location or on Election Day at the polling place where you reside and vote a provisional ballot. Read more about Same Day Registration.
4. When to Vote – Election Day is Tuesday, March 5. Polls will be open from 6am-7pm. In person Early Voting is open until Saturday, March 2.
5. Where to Vote on Election Day – Verify the location of your polling place as it may have moved.
6. Mail Ballot Deadlines – If you requested a Mail Ballot it must be postmarked on or before March 5 and received by 12pm EST on Friday, March 8. You can also drop your Mail Ballot off in a Ballot Drop Box by 7pm, March 5.
