2023 Vision Zero Mid-Year Report and Meeting

Picture2

Arlington’s Year 3 Mid-Year Report has just been released! The report provides an overview of Arlington’s progress toward each of the action items from the Vision Zero Action Plan and highlights key accomplishments and things to come in Year 3 of our safety program.

Take a look at this report and then bring your questions and concerns to the Vision Zero External Stakeholder’s Group Meeting on Thursday, October 19 (7-9 pm). This virtual meeting is open to the public and will offer community members and Vision Zero partners the opportunity to interact with County Vision Zero staff. This is the annual meeting of the Vision Zero External Stakeholders group, and members of the public are encouraged to attend and participate.

2023 Annual Feedback Form Results

Picture3

In April 2023 the Vision Zero team held several advertised and surprise pop-up events and circulated feedback forms to hear from community members across the county about transportation safety issues.  Over 1,050 individuals participated in the year 3 Vision Zero Annual Safety Feedback Form. The top three concerns for community members were:

  1. Speeding and aggressive driving
  2. Distracted travelers
  3. Drivers not following laws and signals

Discover more key takeaways from the 2023 Feedback Form on the website!

Newly Released Before/After Studies

Four new before/after studies on critical Arlington intersections are now available. The newly released studies include:

  • Clarendon Circle
  • WB Langston Blvd and N Lynn St
  • N Glebe Rd and N Carlin Springs Rd
  • Little Falls Rd and Old Dominion Dr

While the Little Falls Rd and Clarendon Circle studies indicated safety improvements, the Langston Blvd and N Glebe locations need additional improvements. The Vision Zero Team is committed to transparency and to continuing to monitor these locations to determine how to enhance safe traveling patterns for all road users.

Find these studies and several more before and after safety studies on the website. We will continue to conduct and publish before/after studies to ensure that the safety treatments we deploy are effectively improving safety on Arlington’s streets.

Tool Spotlight: Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs)

Picture5

Leading Pedestrian Intervals provide pedestrians with a head start when crossing a signalized intersection by giving a 3-7 second head start on the signal change. By providing pedestrians with a head start, the risk of conflicts between pedestrians and turning vehicles is reduced.

Intersections that are a good fit for a LPI include:

  • Intersections where there is a high level of conflict between heavy turning traffic and pedestrians.
  • Intersections where there are heavy right or left-turn traffic patterns.
  • LPIs could also be applied as a leading bicycle interval for bikeway conflicts with turning traffic.

LPIs have shown up to a 60% reduction in pedestrian-vehicle collisions at treated intersections and are typically a low to moderate cost to implement.

Click here to find more information LPIs as well as many of the other important road safety tools.
