Across the nation, ranked choice voting (RCV) has emerged as an option that allows voters to express their preferences when voting, support more diverse candidates, and improve civility in campaigns and elections. The Arlington County Board voted to introduce this new voting method in the June 20, 2023, County Board primary election.
To ensure that everyone understands RCV, we are excited to announce the release of our Outreach and Education Plan for Ranked Choice Voting. This plan will provide information:
- to voters, so they are prepared to mark their ballots,
- on the adoption of RCV,
- about RCV tabulation and reporting results,
- and to community partners on tools needed to educate the public.
The Outreach and Education Plan is designed to reach a wide audience, from voters and candidates to election practitioners. The plan provides a range of educational materials, including videos, infographics, email newsletters, social media campaigns, and events to help people understand RCV.
In addition, the plan includes outreach to community organizations. We believe that education and outreach are critical to the success of RCV, and we are committed to ensuring that everyone has the tools they need to understand and support implementation.
One of the primary goals of the Outreach and Education Plan is to ensure that people understand how RCV works. RCV is a simple yet powerful voting method that allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference. RCV allows voters to transfer their vote towards another candidate if their first-choice candidate receives the fewest number of votes.
Arlington is committed to ensuring that everyone has the tools they need to understand and implement this new voting method in Arlington. Our Outreach and Education Plan is just the beginning of our efforts to inform our community about RCV. We look forward to working with voters across the county to ensure successful implementation.
