A Look at Arlington’s Sister City, Ivano-Frankivsk

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine a year ago, the Arlington Sister City Association (ASCA) has coordinated ongoing support for Arlington’s sister city of Ivano-Frankivsk. Watch how Arlington and Ivano-Frankivsk came to be paired and learn about ASCA’s continued efforts in raising awareness for fundraising opportunities to aid Ukraine.

Neighborhood College Program Now Accepting Applications

This spring, Arlington County will offer its first hybrid in-person and virtual Neighborhood College Program experience featuring new opportunities to tour County facilities and interact with staff. Applications for the spring session are due by Friday, March 24, 2023.

  • Arlington Economic Development’s BizLaunch is hosting a panel discussion with local female entrepreneurs for International Women’s Day on March 8 at Central Library.
  • Arlington Public Library is hosting its first Arlington Reads of 2023 with author and cartoonist Alison Bechdel on March 9 at Central Library. RSVP to attend in person or online.
  • Arlington’s Commission on the Status of Women will host its 2023 Women of Vision Awards on March 27 to celebrate women who have improved the lives of Arlington residents, especially women and girls, in business, nonprofit work and government or politics.
  • The Department of Parks and Recreation has an exhibit at Lubber Run Park inspired by the work of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama through March 31.
  • Tiffanye Wesley, Deputy Fire Chief of the Arlington County Fire Department, has been accepted into the Fire Service Executive Development Institute, a year-long leadership development program that provides new and aspiring fire chiefs the tools they need to have successful and productive tenures. She is the first African American woman to be promoted to Deputy Fire Chief in the department’s 80-year history.

Around Arlington

  • Get crafty or prep your garden in time for spring with demonstrations for makers at a Shop Open House and garden talks at a Spring Garden Kickoff, both happening March 4 at Central Library.
  • George Mason University has several art exhibits across its campuses in Virginia, include Origin Stories by Bennie Herron at the Mason Square Campus in Arlington, running through March 11. Learn more.
  • Recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will go back to their standard benefits starting this month. Call (703) 228-1350 if you have questions about your SNAP benefits.
  • Instacart workers who made at least one delivery in Washington, D.C., between October 1, 2016, and April 30, 2018, can receive cash payments of at least $150. Workers must fill out an online claim form by March 25, 2023, to qualify for payment. Applicants do not need to reside in D.C. to be eligible.
  • Lubber Run Community Center won a 2023 national award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA)—one of 15 projects to receive recognition for architectural best practices.
  • Arlington’s Historic Preservation Fund will support community and individual projects related to Arlington’s history, built environment and cultural heritage. Submit an application by April 28, 2023.
