West Columbia Pike, Ballston Metro Get Transit Improvements

This week marked the completion of two major transportation projects: Segment H & I of the Columbia Pike Multimodal Street Improvements Project and the Ballston Multimodal Improvements Project. Both bring a more seamless connection to transportation methods in Arlington for residents, commuters and visitors.

New Studio for Arlington Independent Media

Arlington Independent Media, which provides video instruction and broadcast access to the Arlington community, will have a new satellite location at Arlington Arts’ 3700 South Four Mile Run Drive location to expand cultural and arts opportunities in the County.

As people start to travel and gather for Thanksgiving, it’s important to remain safe while at home and on the road. It's also important to protect ourselves and others from COVID-19 and all respiratory viruses.

• Take steps to stay healthy this holiday season. The CDC recommends getting a flu shot and using layered prevention measures against COVID-19 such as masking, testing, improving ventilation and spending time outdoors.
• Traveling for Thanksgiving? Stay ahead of traffic, inclement weather and more by registering for Arlington Alert.
• Click It or Ticket: The Arlington County Police Department (ACPD) is teaming up with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to help keep travelers safe this Thanksgiving holiday, working toward reducing the number of fatalities that occur when motorists fail to buckle up. In addition, check out these transportation safety tips from ACPD as part of the Fall 2022 Street Smart Campaign.
• Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires. Follow these holiday cooking safety tips from Arlington County Fire Department, and be sure to keep your pipes free from fats, oils and grease.

Thanksgiving Holiday Schedule: Arlington County Government offices and services are operating on modified schedules for the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, Nov. 24, and Friday, Nov. 25.

• Share your thoughts on improving Arlington Transit by Nov. 20.
• Provide your input on the North Sycamore Complete Streets project through Nov. 20 and see how community feedback helped inform the concept design.
• Share your feedback on three pilot safety projects, part of the Vision Zero Action Plan to eliminate severe and fatal crashes involving pedestrians, through Nov. 20.
• Two design concepts have been created for the 2700 South Nelson Street site. Tell us what you think through Nov. 21 to shape the future temporary creative open space.
• Join the Site Plan Review Committee for a hybrid public meeting on Mon., Nov. 28, to discuss a proposal for the Americana Hotel at 1400 Richmond Highway.
• County transportation staff is hosting an in-person open house on Nov. 29 to explore various transportation safety projects.
• Looking to volunteer your time to benefit the Arlington community? Send in your application for appointment to a commission, including the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Planning Commission, the Community Oversight Board (COB), and more.

Construction is underway to make improvements to the Boundary Channel Drive Interchange, which will improve traffic flow and make travel safer and less constricted for drivers. Watch the video and learn more about the project.

• Arlington County officials and staff joined the opening celebration of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s (WMATA) long-awaited Silver Line Extension on Nov. 15. With this extension, Metrorail now serves 97 stations in Virginia, Maryland and D.C.
• Medicare open enrollment runs through Dec. 7. Check out these tips from Arlington Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP), which offers free, confidential and unbiased one-on-one Medicare counseling.
• Arlington County’s hypothermia shelter is now open through March 2023. If you or someone you know is experiencing homelessness and needs emergency shelter, call 703-228-1010.
• Make the holidays brighter for children in need by participating in Arlington County Police Department’s Fill the Cruiser holiday toy drives at several locations during November and early December.
• Need support getting meals during the holidays? Arlington’s Department of Human Services has a list of food assistance programs and organizations to help.
