Trunk or Treat

Call for Trunks

We’re still looking for a few more trunks for DPR's annual Trunk or Treat event on Sat., Oct. 22Click here to sign up to decorate your car trunk, wear a costume and hand out 350 candies or other small giveaways to kids of all ages. The event will be held from 2-4 p.m. and vehicles will be on site from 1-4:30 p.m. 


Safety Days

Mental Health and Workplace Safety are the themes for Arlington County's 2022 Employee Safety Days! Sessions will be offered in a HYBRID approach - in-person at the Trades Conference Center and virtual through Teams. Sign up here.

 

DPR is going to be represented this year! Thank you to Michelle Atkin and Ken Rosenthal for presenting Wellness & Outdoor Safety on Thursday @ 1 p.m. Let's fill the seats at the Trades Conference Center for this presentation or check it out through the virtual link.

 

Attendance matters! Be sure to sign in for any sessions that you attend so that it is reflected in your Learning Center Training History. Besides great knowledge sharing, there will be random prizes and giveaways!

Skate Night

Staff-Only Skate Night Oct. 15!

Skate night returns to TJ this fall! And to kick it off, a special Arlington County employee-only skate night is planned for Sat., Oct. 15, 6-9 p.m. at Thomas Jefferson Community Center. Sign up in advance here. The best part? It's FREE! See you on the skate floor!

Welcome, Janelle, Jennifer, Michael and Nick!

Janelle

Janelle Johnson is the new Lead Swim Instructor for the Athletic and Facility Services Division. She has been in the aquatics field nearly eight years as a lifeguard, water safety instructor, pool operator and lifeguard instructor. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her animals – two bunnies and one dog. She looks forward to expanding her knowledge and comfort with the programing side of aquatics. Can't wait to see you make a splash, Janelle!

 

 

Jennifer

Jennifer Storch is the new Head Lifeguard at Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center. She has worked in aquatics for over 11 years and previously worked at Reston Community Center where she learned a lot about pool operations, training lifeguards and working in an aquatic facility. In her spare time she enjoys hiking and biking.  She is looking forward to gaining new skills related, working with new people and learning from their experiences as well as sharing her own knowledge to improve Long Bridge. Happy to have you here, Jennifer!

 

 

Michael

Michael Nelson is a new Trades Worker III for Parks and Natural Resources. His appreciation for Parks and Recreation started 37 years ago as a Boy Scout and he has been involved since. He previously was a Parks Maintenance Worker III with Montgomery County Maryland Parks. In his free time he enjoys bicycling around 100 miles a week (mountains, bikes, roads) and producing video and photos for documentary, social media and commercial use. His two sons Clark (19) and Philip (17) and dog Lexy sometimes join him on his adventures. He looks forward to learning more about Arlington County Parks! We're lucky to have you, Michael!

 

Nicholas

Nick Johnson is the new Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Programmer with the Community Recreation Division team. Nick has been working in the field of disability services and community recreation since 2014. Previously, he was at the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) where he worked in Inclusion Services and the Special Programs Division. When not at work, he is a competitor in the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and also teaches both kids and adults. Nick also loves mountain biking, backpacking, camping and spending time with his friends and family. Nick looks forward to getting to know all his new coworkers and learning about how the Community Recreation Division works. Welcome to DPR, Nick!


Join the Game of Stones!

Interested in continuous learning throughout the year that you can do when you want? The County is piloting a new training initiative called the Game of Stones, a learning plan of five courses announced at the beginning of each month. Enroll and complete all five courses to earn a certificate. For FY23, each certificate has a birthstone gem attached to it and will serve as the currency to be eligible for rewards.
