This fall and early in 2023, Arlington Transit (ART), will be pilot testing battery-powered buses for range to see how they handle Arlington's geography, like steep hills and neighborhood streets.
The County is partnering with several manufacturers as part of a Zero Emission Bus (ZEB) Pilot starting this month into early 2023. The pilot will allow ART to collect data and assess vehicle performance during actual operation in the County.
Throughout the test period, the public will have opportunities to ride the ZEBs and give feedback on their experience online. The first group of buses are operating on ART routes right now and more will be added over the course of the pilot.

The County Board will be considering a Request to Authorize Advertisement of a proposed change to the speed limit on Columbia Pike between South Dinwiddie Street and the County Line.
This proposed change is part of an action item from Arlington's Vision Zero Action Plan, which calls for a review of all roads with a speed limit of 30 MPH or higher. Staff from the project team recommended this segment for a speed limit reduction based on the following considerations:
- This corridor is on the Vision Zero High Injury Network
- Slower speeds provide a safer environment for the high pedestrian volumes and high transit usage along the corridor
- The recently completed capital improvements have lowered observed vehicle speeds along the segment
In keeping with Virginia and with County code, all proposed speed limit changes must be approved by the County Board at a public hearing.
If the Board approves the Request to Authorize Advertisement, this hearing will take place at the County Board meeting on October 15, 2022.
