At their January 2022 meeting, the County Board adopted an ordinance to allow the use of speed cameras to issue speeding citations to drivers going above the speed limit in school zones and work zones. Speed cameras are an effective tool to reduce speeds and severe crashes in Arlington
Our next step is to procure a speed camera operations contractor. Then, we will likely see speed cameras in operation in late 2022 or early 2023.

Arlington Police and the Vision Zero Team have been working to expand the County’s red light camera program. Red-light cameras are a valuable tool for enhancing safety by reducing severe and fatal red-light running crashes.
Expansion of the red-light camera program is listed in the Vision Zero Action Plan under Action Item B8: Data-Driven/Equitable Enforcement and also recommended by the County’s Police Practices Work Group to reduce the potential for enforcement bias.
Using crash data and observational data, we identified six new intersections for red-light cameras. These six intersections will be installed in addition to the nine intersections with red-light cameras currently in place. Cameras will likely go into operation in Summer 2022.

Red light camera citations are $50 and are civil in nature. They do not count toward points on a license or for insurance purposes. Per state law, there will be signs in advance of the intersection informing drivers that they are approaching a red-light camera.

Christine Baker, Arlington’s Vision Zero Program Coordinator, shares her car seat inspection testimonial: “We got our car seat inspected when my son was one week old. I thought we’d followed the instructions to a tee, but it turned out that the seat wasn’t hooked up properly and we weren’t even strapping him in correctly. I am so thankful that ACPD provided this service to ensure that my kid is safe in his seat!”
