20MPH School Slow Zones Approved
At their November meeting, the County Board adopted an ordinance to adjust Chapter 14.2 of the County Code, setting permanent 20MPH speed limits on 58 street segments within 13 school zones. They will be the first permanent 20MPH speed limits on neighborhood roads in the County.
County planners expect to see implementation of the slow zones take 3-5 months to complete. Given current supply chain difficulties, Arlington County has limited access to typical infrastructure materials, which may cause a delay in the roll out of some school zones.

South Four Mile Run Drive Complete Streets Project Complete
This month, Arlington competed a capital project on S. Four Mile Run Drive, one of Arlington's High-Injury Network corridors. The project enhanced safety on S. Four Mile Run Drive between Shirlington Road and S. Nelson Street by re-configuring the roadway, as conceptualized in the Four Mile Run Valley Area Plan by
- Providing a pedestrian pathway on the north side of S. Four Mile Run Drive.
- Shortening a pedestrian path on the north side of S. Four Mile Run Drive.
- Narrowing travel lanes and turning radii at intersections.
- Improving accessibility to nearby bus stops. (ART Routes 75 & 87, Metro Routes 10B, 23A/B/T)
Staff will continue to monitor this roadway to observe impacts on speed and safety. Learn more on the project website or visit the newly renovated Jennie Dean Park to see the improvements in person!

Bicycle & Pedestrian Improvements on Rosslyn - Ballston Corridor
Arlington County acquired jurisdiction of the VA-237 Corridor (Fairfax Drive from Glebe Road to 10th Street North & 10th Street North from Fairfax Drive to Baton Street) from the Virginia Department of Transportation in 2018. The transition in ownership prompted an immediate safety and accessibility audit along the Fairfax Drive & 10th Street N. corridor, leading to a series of quick-build projects. (including signage, pavement markings, crossing improvements, flashing beacons at select crossings, & speed mitigation measures.)
This section of Fairfax Drive is included in Arlington's High-Injury Network and is a priority for safety enhancements for vulnerable users, such as pedestrians and cyclists. To advance recommendations of the 2019 VA-237 audit, staff installed bike lane markings through intersections, two-stage bike turn boxes to help cyclists make safe left turns, and "no right turns on red" signage at intersections along the corridor to improve awareness. Staff also added similar turn boxes on Wilson and Clarendon Boulevard.

Nelly Custis Drive & Military Road Roundabout Pilot Installed
In October, the County installed a temporary roundabout at Military Road and Nelly Custis Drive as a safety pilot project. This was part of a collaboration between the Vision Zero team and its partners across Arlington County. The goals of the project are to
- Increase driver yield rates
- Install additional crosswalks to shorten crossing distances
- Provide predictable vehicle turning movements
- Reduce vehicle speeding

This pilot will be in place for a year, during which staff will collect data and feedback. Since the roundabout is temporary, it can be adjusted or removed based on the safety data collected. For more information, please visit the Military Road Safety Improvements page or the Vision Zero Pilot Projects page.
