Recycling Right Tips

Where Does it Go?

Follow these tips to make sure you're recycling right:

  • Place recyclables loose in the blue recycling cart (no plastic bags) OR your own personal container, paper bags or in cardboard boxes. Acceptable items for curbside recycling: paper and cardboard, plastic bottles, jugs and containers, metal cans and aluminum foil and trays. Check out the Where Does It Go Directory for sorting help.
  • Make sure items are empty before placing them in the cart.
  • Do a quick rinse for recyclables that contain a thick residue like peanut butter or spaghetti sauce, or wipe with a paper towel.
  • Keep food-contaminated paper such as napkins and paper towels out of the blue carts. Same goes for pizza boxes soaked in grease. Dry, relatively grease-free pizza boxes are acceptable.
  • Look for products that come packaged in easily recyclable materials like aluminum and steel cans, plastic bottles (for soda, water, juice, milk, detergent, shampoo, etc.), and cartons (milk, juice, soups, etc.).

How Can We Recycle Better?

1. Buy less.

2. Purchase durable goods.

3. Donate items in good condition.

4. Recycle accepted materials only. Remember: Clean and dry.

5. Stop “wishful recycling” — that rubber garden hose is not recyclable.

Check out our Where Does it Go Directory to find out how to properly dispose of items.

Recyclable, But Not in the Blue Cart

Find other methods to recycle the following items, which are not accepted in the curbside recycling program:

  • GLASS should be taken to recycling drop-off sites
  • PLASTIC BAGS (any type). Plastic bags and film are not accepted in the curbside recycling collection system. Collect plastic bags together to be left in grocery store recycling bins or at similar locations. Find local bag drop-off sites by visiting plasticfilmrecycling.org.
  • ELECTRONICS (any type)
    • Mon.-Thurs., 8 a.m. – noon, by appointment only — call 703-228-5000 during weekday business hours; Saturdays, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m without appointment beginning May 1.
    • Attend an E-CARE collection drop-off event, offered by the County spring and fall.
  • LITHIUM ION BATTERIES
    • Even the small batteries in greeting cards present a fire hazard to recycling staff and facilities. Learn more here.
    • Battery collection boxes are located at designated fire stations throughout the County. Visit: https://www.recycle.arlingtonva.us for more information.

Mulch and Shredding

Arlington County offers free mulch for pickup, plus delivered mulch for a nominal fee. A free paper shredding event is held on the first Saturday of each month (not including holidays) at the Trades Center facility in Shirlington.
