 Proposed configuration for the interchange
In January the County Board voted unanimously to endorse the Boundary Channel Drive-I-395 interchange project’s major design elements. The project, which is being administered by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) on behalf of the County, will improve connections for people walking and biking and improve safety for drivers along I-395, Boundary Channel Drive and Long Bridge Drive.
Boundary Channel Drive will be reduced from four lanes to two, and two crossroad ramps along the drive will be converted to roundabouts. VDOT will build an 8-foot-wide sidewalk on the south side of the drive and a 12-foot shared-use path along its north side. A trail will connect to the Mount Vernon Trail and to a new loop trail around the Arlington County Aquatics and Fitness Center to the Long Bridge Park esplanade.

Last July, the County Board approved an interim agreement with a JBG SMITH subsidiary, JBGS/TRS, LLC, for development of 30 percent design documents for the second entrance at the Crystal City Metrorail Station.
The engineering and design process kicked off in September, and the 30% design phase is anticipated to be complete this summer. Key elements of this phase include topographical survey, environmental analysis, and preliminary station design.
This spring the County will host a public meeting as part of the project’s 30% design phase, and WMATA will hold a public hearing as part of their review process. Stay tuned for dates and details once these meetings are scheduled.
