Based on the site location, sponsor group funding and community input, Gateway Park Interim Dog Park project is a go!
Arlington looks at the criteria for proposing an interim park amenity to determine if one can be built. The Gateway Park Interim Dog Park passed these markers.
Most recently, the public engagement process included feedback from 280 participants on the need for this temporary amenity as well as the proposed design. Overall, there was strong support for the proposal-- highlighting an interest in activating this space, and filling a need for dog exercise and relief nearby.
There were, however, comments voicing concern for the loss of casual-use space and a lack of greenspace in the Rosslyn area. This is consistent with the feedback heard during the Public Spaces Master Plan process. The County is working on balancing different needs and increasing access to greenspace and casual use space through redevelopment and park master planning.
The sponsor group, R-DOGS has signed the Adopt-a-Dog Park agreement and secured funding for the project. Construction on the dog park is expected to begin shortly and be completed sometime in the first quarter of 2021, weather permitting.
The interim dog park will be in place until a Park Master Plan is developed for Gateway Park and funding is available to construct the plan. The interim dog park will be reviewed annually to ensure it is safe and used appropriately.
