Columbia Pike west end construction update

(For work between South Jefferson Street and the Four Mile Run Bridge)

Columbia Pike construction

Construction on the south side of Columbia Pike near the Four Mile Run Bridge

Construction between Columbus Street and Four Mile Run Bridge

Construction is underway on the south side of Columbia Pike between South Columbus Street and the Four Mile Run Bridge, next to the 7-Eleven. As a result, Columbia Pike is one lane in each direction from just west of the Dinwiddie/Columbus Street intersection to the Four Mile Run Bridge.

Left turn restrictions at Dinwiddie/Columbus Street intersection:

During this work, left turns are not allowed from Columbia Pike onto:

  • Southbound Columbus Street - View detour map
  • Northbound Dinwiddie Street - View detour map
  • 7-Eleven entrance on Columbia Pike - The store is accessible from Columbus Street
  • Columbia Pike Plaza’s east entrance - The Plaza’s west entrance on Columbia Pike remains open

Construction between County line and Greenbrier Street

Columbia Pike continues to be one lane in each direction between South Jefferson Street and Greenbrier Street.

During the current phase of work, the sidewalk on the north side of Columbia Pike will be closed as needed. Pedestrians should cross Columbia Pike at South Jefferson Street or Greenbrier Street and use the sidewalk on the south side. For those accessing the Serrano Apartments, Bartton Place or the commercial building, sidewalk access will be maintained either east of the access road to the Greenbrier Street intersection or west to the Jefferson Street intersection.

Two-week construction lookahead

The PDF document below describes construction activities planned for Monday, Aug. 24 through Sunday, Sept. 6. It also lists expected impacts including any additional lane closures, driveway impacts and sidewalk closures.

Items to note:

  • The driveway entrances for the following properties will be partially closed during roadway construction but access will be maintained:
    • Access road to Serrano Apartments, Bartton Place and the commercial building on the north side of Columbia Pike (east of the Jefferson Street intersection)

After receiving community feedback about improving the Columbia Pike Four Mile Run Bridge sidewalk connection, County staff examined the issue and determined its possible to widen the bridge’s north side sidewalk.

The planned improvements include:

  • Widening the north-side sidewalk to 10 feet (existing sidewalk width is 5 feet)
  • Providing lighting on the north-side bridge sidewalk
  • Replacing the split-rail style guardrails on the bridge approaches with sturdier metal railings

The project is in design with implementation anticipated this fall, to coordinate as much as possible with current construction along the west end of Columbia Pike.
