Construction starting soon on Ballston-MU Metro Station plaza improvements
A rendering of the improved plaza area
Construction will soon begin on major improvements to the bus stops and seating areas along North Fairfax Drive and North Stuart Street, around the heavily used Ballston-MU Metro station. Work is anticipated to start in May and last for approximately 18 months.
The Ballston Multimodal project will replace the bus driveway on Fairfax Drive with four new bus bays, expand pedestrian spaces, and add real-time information displays to nine bus stops in this area, along with upgrading streetlights and adding landscaping.
What to expect during construction
There will be four major phases of construction:
Phase 1 – Bus bays along Fairfax Drive
Phase 2 – Bus bays along North Stuart Street
Phase 3 – Plaza on North Stuart Street
Phase 4 – Plaza on Fairfax Drive
During the first two phases, existing bus stops will be closed and bus service will be temporarily routed to stops on the west side of North Stuart Street.
Bike parking at the station will remain available, but bike racks will be temporarily relocated to North Stuart Street during work on the plaza.
Effective Sunday, May 10, Bus stops E, F and G along Fairfax Drive will be closed during the project's first phase of construction, with service temporarily moved to bus stops on the west side of North Stuart Street.
