2019 First Responders’ Cup Softball Tournament

Each year on the weekend around the anniversary of September 11, the First Responders Cup Tournament Committee hosts a Girls Fast Pitch Tournament. This tournament brings together the very best teams from those area directly affected by the 9/11 attacks. Don't miss this year's tournament Sat.-Sun., Sept. 7-8. Full game schedule can be found here. All net proceeds raised from the tournament are donated to Pentagon Disaster Relief charities. Opening ceremonies start Sat., Sept. 7, 7:30 a.m.

 

Arlington PD Friends and Family Fund Annual Charity Softball Tournament

For the 7th year, the Arlington County Police Department and other public safety personnel will compete in a one-day tournament on Sat., Sept. 14, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. to raise money for their fellow officers and their families in times of need. Don't miss out on the fun, food, raffle tickets and merchandise for a good cause.

Travel Gurus: Ghana

Learn about destinations near and far on Wed., Sept. 11, 1-2:30 p.m. from local "travel gurus". Maxwell Osei Anokye will share his recent travel experiences in Ghana and its popular tourist attractions.

 

Aurora Hills Acoustic Hour   

On Fri., Sept. 13, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., enjoy fellowship and music from the 50s and beyond with other 55+ members! Ed Girovasi and Bobby Lake are back again to lead a musical journey of acoustic folk, pop, and rock songs across the decades. Feel free to bring your lunch.

 

Author Talk: Emergency Management in the United States

"Emergency Management: The American Experience" describes many of the history-making disasters of the past century and also the emergence of the field of emergency management. On Fri., Sept. 20, 1:30-3 p.m., learn about the U.S. disasters that ranged from major to catastrophic, raising questions about where and why they happened. Author Claire Rubin will also discuss disaster events that have affected this metro area and how to prepare for them.

 

Indoor Picnic and Activity Showcase

Join us on Fri., Sept. 27, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. for a fabulous free indoor picnic to celebrate Senior Center Month! Representatives from a variety of Aurora Hills activity groups will be showcasing their activities and answering questions. Best of all – bring a friend who might be interested in becoming an Arlington County 55+ member. They can check out the showcase and sign up for October’s Free Preview of Aurora Hills' programs and become eligible to win a one-year 55+ membership. Spraygrounds Final Summer Splash 

School is just around the corner - why not get out and celebrate the last weekend of summer at a sprayground. There’s one open pretty much any time between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. somewhere in Arlington. Find one near you. All spraygrounds close for the season  on Labor Day - Mon., Sept. 2 at 8 p.m.

 

Fall Campfires @ Our Nature Centers

The whole family is invited to join in our campfires, for lots of old fashioned fun. You’ll hear campfire stories, may meet some animal guests, play games, sing songs and, of course, enjoy S’mores! Each campfire has a nature theme and promises to entertain. Please note, campfires will not be held in inclement weather. If the weather is uncertain, contact the appropriate nature center. Register children and adults; children must be accompanied by a registered adult. All Fall Campfires are $5 per person.

 

Public Invited to NVSO Opening Ceremonies

Join the fun and cheer for Arlington’s athletes at the opening ceremonies of Northern Virginia Senior Olympics on Sat., Sept. 14, 9-9:30 a.m. Hosted by Arlington County’s Dept. of Parks and Recreation and Office of Senior Adult Programs, the opening will feature the carrying of the NVSO Olympic torch, Color Guard presentation and recognition of County officials and patrons. The public is invited, free of charge, to all NVSO events.
