Final phase of Crystal Drive two-way conversion starting construction

Crystal Drive

On Friday, Feb. 22, construction is scheduled to begin on the Crystal Drive two-way conversion's final phase, which will convert both Crystal Drive between 26th and 27th Streets South and 27th Street between Route 1 and Crystal Drive to two-way operation.

Work will start at the Route 1 and 27th Street intersection, and project construction is expected to last approximately nine months.

This project is designed to improve traffic circulation patterns in Crystal City. It’s the third and final phase of converting Crystal Drive from one-way to two-way travel, as planned in the Crystal City Sector Plan. Upon completion, Crystal Drive will be a two-way street from South Potomac Avenue/27th Street South up through 12th Street South.

In addition to the two-way conversion, street improvements will include a loading area near the Hyatt Regency hotel, a new right-turn pocket for northbound Crystal Drive onto 26th Street, a bike lane on southbound Crystal Drive and sharrows on northbound Crystal Drive.

What to expect during construction:

  • Work hours will be 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. No weekend work is planned during this project.
  • There are no complete road closures planned for the duration of construction. There will be temporary lane closures throughout construction, but at least one lane will remain open on both 27th Street and Crystal Drive.
  • There will be periodic sidewalk closures during construction. Pedestrians should follow the detour signs and not enter active construction zones during these closures.

Clark Street demolition update

Clark Street demolition

Of the estimated 22,000 cubic yards of soil to be removed during this project, to date, approximately two-thirds have been hauled off-site.

The contractor’s crew continues to work between 12th and 15th Streets. They have demolished and removed the concrete retaining wall positioned between Clark Street and 14th Street South. In conjunction, the contractor has started installing new storm drain facilities and conducting rough grading activities in the same area. Between 15th and 18th Streets, crews have resumed hauling excess soil and other debris off-site.

The installation of traffic signal equipment and street lights at Route 1 and 20th Street South was temporarily interrupted, but activities in this area are expected to resume soon.

Next detours

The next detours for this project will occur during removal of the Clark Street bridge over 18th Street South. This work has not yet been scheduled, but there will be a two-week advance notice before the detour starts.
