Contract for elevated Clark Street demolition heads to County Board

Elevated Clark Street at 15th Street South
Elevated Clark Street at 15th Street South

The County Board is scheduled to discuss the construction contract for the demolition and reconstruction phases of the Clark Street demolition project at its Sept. 16 meeting. If the contract is approved, demolition is anticipated to start later this fall. Updates will be provided on the project page and through this email update.

About the project

The Clark Street demolition project will remove the elevated South Clark Street roadway and bridges between 12th and 20th Streets. Removing the elevated roadway will normalize the street network and create space for future redevelopment, in accordance with the Crystal City Sector Plan. As part of this project, traffic signal upgrades will be installed at the intersection of 20th Street South and US Route 1.

After removal of the roadway, overhead bridges, abutments and retaining walls, crews will complete new retaining walls, regrading, installation of grass pavers and stormwater facilities, and landscaping improvements. The demolition will also create additional space for pedestrian and bicycle access improvements to the Crystal City Metro Station, which is part of a future project.

The new facility provides crucial operational space for ART’s bus fleet and provides more flexibility for how ART fuels and maintains its vehicles. The two-story facility includes a light-duty maintenance bay, bus wash bay, compressed natural gas fueling station and additional parking.
