Public Engagement Opportunities

Joint Facilities Advisory Commission (JFAC)

You are invited to attend a public forum (Wednesday, May 24, 7-10 p.m. at Wakefield High School) to review potential scenarios for the Buck property (located off Quincy St.) and Virginia Hospital sites, including the property at 601 S. Carlin Springs Road. During this interactive forum, participants will have a chance to provide feedback on possible use options being explored by the commission. JFAC is charged with making recommendations on near-term use options for these opportunities to the County Board and School Board while considering how to meet the community's changing long-term facility needs.


Accessory Dwelling Ordinance Update

Join a community conversation on proposed updates to the accessory dwelling ordinance, which governs second dwellings with a kitchen, bathroom, and a separate entrance on existing single family lots. Staff will share draft recommendations from a citizen-led Working Group on improving the ordinance, which went into effect in 2009.


Columbia Pike Village Update

Food Star Supermarket
Food Star supermarket’s lease is set to expire by May 25, 2017, and the plaza will be redeveloped into a mixed-use project. During construction, several other markets and food stores in the nearby area may serve the Columbia Pike community. County Board Actions

County Board Approves New Elementary School at Thomas Jefferson Site

The County Board approved a use permit and land lease agreement for a new elementary school and parking garage that will replace an existing surface lot at the Thomas Jefferson Site. Arlington Public Schools plans to open the new 752-seat elementary school in September 2019.

 

County Board Approves Rosslyn Farmers Market

The County Board approved a use permit and license agreement for a farmers market on the public plaza at Central Place in Rosslyn. FreshFarm Markets plans to operate on Wednesday evenings from April through November.

The American Planning Association yesterday recognized Arlington’s commitment to community-based planning and smart growth with a Gold 2017 National Planning Achievement Award.
