Transitway Opens: What You Need to Know

Bus-only lane

On April 17, the Arlington portion of the Crystal City Potomac Yard Transitway opened. With it came changes to bus service and how we use our streets.

Here's what bus riders, drivers and cyclists need to know:

New bus lanes

On Monday morning, April 18, the new rush hour bus lane through Crystal City started operating. This lane, on northbound Crystal Drive and southbound Clark/Bell Street, is reserved for buses on weekdays between 6 and 9 a.m. and 3:30 and 7 p.m.

During these times other vehicles may only enter the lane to make a right turn at the next corner or driveway. Illuminated signs above the lane and signage along the street indicate when the bus-only restriction is in force.

More information is available on Understanding Transit Lanes and in our list of frequently asked questions.

New stations

On April 17, certain bus stops in Crystal City and Potomac Yard closed and new transit stations opened. This map shows which stops closed and where new stations are located.

What to expect at the new stations:

  • During the start-up phase for Arlington's Transitway, some real-time bus arrival information may not be accurate. Arlington and WMATA are working to improve the reliability of this information.
  • Be aware of the curb height along the bus boarding area - it’s greater than a standard curb to provide near-level boarding with the bus.
  • Do not step onto or off the higher curb to cross the street - use crosswalks instead.
  • Stand back from the platform edge while waiting for the bus.
  • Receptacles for trash and recyclables are available. Help us keep the stations clean.
  • Bike racks are available at the stations. Racks also are installed on the front of Metroway buses so you can bring your bike with you.

Construction Updates

ART Bus Facility

Demolition of the existing curb and gutter along South Eads Street is complete, in preparation for new sidewalk and roadway features. During the next two weeks, traffic control changes will be necessary - please be aware of minor delays along South Eads during daily commutes.

The building slab was poured last week. Crews are now preparing to go vertical with the structural steel. Underground utilities are also being finalized throughout the site.

Crystal City Multimodal Center

This week the contractor was completing the reconstruction of the concrete sidewalk areas on eastbound 18th Street South. The eastbound roadway and bus bays were opened on April 18.

Next week crews will focus on completing the installation of pavers on eastbound 18th Street near South Bell Street and resume paver installation on the westbound side of the street. Once the westbound-side pavers are completed, pedestrian traffic will be shifted onto the pavers so the contractor can reconstruct the concrete sidewalks underneath the Route 1 overpass. Visit project page

Detours/Lane Closures

The following lane closures are due to project construction:

18th Street South under Route 1 overpass

Eastbound:

  • Outside lanes are open with some restrictions based on day-to-day construction activities.
  • No striped bike lanes at this time but traffic lanes are open to cyclists - Use caution due to uneven surfaces and bus traffic at the active bus bays.
  • Sidewalk is reopened with restrictions - Use caution and mind the signage and warning tape.

Westbound:

  • Traffic is one lane, which needs to be shared with cyclists and motor vehicles.
  • Sidewalk remains open but limited.

South Eads Street

  • From 31st Street to Glebe Road, the sidewalk and bike lane along the east side are temporarily closed.
