September is Constitution Month. It was a privilege this week to join Governor Cox, a fabulous youth choir and many other patriotic Utahns to kickoff Constitution Month and the “Why I Love America” campaign, which encourages Utah school children to learn more about the constitution and read directly from it. Some events in our area include:
- Sept 11: 9/11 Memorial at the Weber County Fairgrounds
- Sept 14-16: Freedom’s Light Festival at the Bountiful Park
- Sept 17: Why I love America Interfaith Event (7PM, Christian Life Center in Layton)
We are so grateful to Congressman Stewart for his service over the last decade, and wish him and his family all the best. We were lucky to have had him as our representative in congress (and as a Farmington resident of our House District 18).
Tuesday, September 5th is the day of the Special Election for CD-2. I encourage you to vote if you are eligible to participate in the Republican Primary. You can have your ballot postmarked up until September 5th, you can put it in an election drop box, or you can vote at the polls on Election Day.
There are 3 well qualified candidates, Bruce Hough, Celest Maloy, and Becky Edwards. I have endorsed Celeste Maloy. I was very impressed with her deep knowledge of key local policy issues and her commitment to bring people together to solve the many problems we have with the federal government. She is ready to push back against federal agencies who have overstepped their authority. She knows how Congress works and will be an asset to CD2 and the state as a whole starting on day one. I would encourage you to learn more about her at celesteforutah.com.
Property Valuation Notices were mailed out to Davis County residents in July, if you wish to appeal your property valuation, you need to do so before September 15, 2023. If you believe your property is not valued correctly, you can appeal that valuation (for more info visit this link)
The State Auditor’s office has released a helpful new tool to make it easier and more transparent to find and compare property values that are used by the County Assessor for property tax calculations, you can find that tool at: https://transparent.utah.gov/property.php.
I’m excited and looking forward to the new Museum of Utah that will be located on the first floor of the North Capitol building, which is under construction now and expected to open in 2026.
I hope you all have a fun, safe, and enjoyable holiday weekend! I am proud to live in a state that is known for its industrious spirit. The hardworking people of Utah are a big part of what makes our state the best place to live, work, and play.

I enjoyed meeting with my fellow legislators during this month’s interim meetings. These meetings are an opportunity for us to hear presentations from experts and stakeholders, as well as public comment, all of which helps us prepare for the upcoming legislative session. You can read the highlights of these meetings here. September’s interim meetings will be held on the 18th in St George. You can participate in person or online at le.utah.gov
To all the students across the state who are headed back for the start of the new school year, I wish you luck in all your academic endeavors! Education is the key to unlocking a brighter future and remains a top priority for myself and the legislature.
Finally, on a personal note, our family celebrated a significant milestone this month as my son Scotty was married. It’s a meaningful thing to see children progress and take on new responsibilities. We chose to live in this community because it’s a great place for families. We are very grateful to the many teachers, friends and family members who have taught, encouraged and supported him over the years.
