This past week we celebrated Pioneer Day and I later participated in a family reunion where we visited the pioneer era farm home of my grandparents in Millcreek and the ranch home of my ancestor Fielding Garr on Antelope Island. I was struck as I considered the harsh challenges of pioneer life and the sacrifices made by so many who literally spent their lives building up our communities in Utah. Whether our direct ancestors or not, we all benefit from the resilient lives these pioneers lived and the communities they built up and established. I am so grateful for our rich state history and all the generations who came before us who helped to make Utah the best place to live, work, and play.
Interim legislative meetings will resume this month on August 8th and 9th. I look forward to meeting with my colleagues to discuss the pressing needs of our state and invite you to participate online at le.utah.gov.
In July I had the opportunity to attend the Show Up for Teachers event for the first time when my wife Sherry was asked to present a breakout session (which she did a fabulous job at). What a fantastic positive event celebrating the life changing work that our amazing teachers do each day. I’m grateful to First Lady Abby Cox for her vision and leadership recognizing educators. And I always learn new things when I get a chance to hear Arthur Brooks present on what drives happiness and fulfillment
Show the lake some love by signing up for a special Great Salt Lake license plate! This was one of the least controversial bills I sponsored as everyone agrees we should join together to support the lake. Purchase of the plate will contribute to a fund which will be used to benefit the Great Salt Lake watershed & ecosystem. Here are instructions on how to sign up for a GSL plate. Here are some links to recent articles about the GSL License Plate and Video Clip where I was interviewed as a bill sponsor: Fox 13 , ABC4, SLTribune,
This year, we were blessed with the snowiest winter on record. However, one good winter doesn't make up for years of drought. Water conservation is as important as ever, especially as we face record high temperatures. Like many of you, I’m going through the painful, but needed process of converting my park strip and some other front yard areas from grass to more water friendly landscaping. Learn more about what's being done to conserve as well as what you can do to help here.
I recently met and listened to Congressional candidate Celeste Maloy at the Centerville library. I was very impressed with her deep knowledge of key policy issues and her commitment to bring people together to solve the many problems we have with the federal government. I encourage you to learn more about her and listen to her speak. I think you will be surprised and impressed as I was.
