Congressman Chris Stewart announced his intention to resign his seat in Utah’s 2nd Congressional District (CD2). Congressman Stewart represents most of the residents in our Davis County House District 18 which stretches from Bountiful to Kaysville, however, some District 18 residents in NW Farmington & Kaysville are part of Utah’s 1st Congressional District, represented by Congressman Blake Moore. To address this congressional vacancy and ensure Utahns remain fully represented in Washington, the Legislature convened in a special session, where they passed a bill to establish election processes and protocols for a special election this fall.
H.B. 2001 Election Amendments
To save money and simplify the process, the Governor’s office and the Legislature made the decision to combine the CD2 special election with this year’s municipal elections. Because of certain federal and state requirements related to selecting candidates, and to printing and mailing ballots to overseas members of the military, the election schedule had to be modified. Municipal primary elections and the CD2 special election will be held on September 5. The general elections will be held on November 21. Learn more and register to vote at vote.utah.gov.
I strongly encourage everyone to take time to learn more about candidates and vote in the combined municipal and special congressional elections this year. Your local city councilmembers can have a significant impact on local policies that impacts your community. On the Davis County Elections Website, you can view to your local municipal candidates (only Bountiful had enough candidates file to require a primary election, Centerville, Farmington and Kaysville will only have a general election November 21).
Congratulations to Celeste Maloy for winning the special Utah GOP Convention in June as the Nominee to replace Chris Stewart. While I don’t know Celeste personally, I have heard very positive things about her work from many of those who have worked closely with her when she was part of Congressman Stewart’s staff. In addition to Celeste Maloy, I expect that there will be others who qualify for the Republican Primary September 5th via the signature process, including Becky Edwards. Here are links to recent statements from Legislative Leadership and the Lt. Governor regarding recent inquiries about candidate eligibility.
I enjoyed meeting with my colleagues this last month for interim committees to discuss the needs of our state. Click here to read the highlights (warning-12 pages!) from June’s meetings. There is no interim in July. We will meet again on August 8th and 9th at the Utah State Capitol. Follow along at le.utah.gov.
I hope you and your family enjoyed Independence Day celebrations together. I am grateful for the many freedoms we enjoy as citizens of this great nation. I am proud to be an American and a Utahn. Whether your 4th of July traditions and celebrations include parades, fireworks, family or food, I hope they were safe and enjoyable.
Thank you to my friend Andrew Wriggle and the Disability Law Center of Utah for inviting me to attend the Justice Rising breakfast June 1st and for the good work they do every day to help Utah’s most vulnerable citizens.
On June 3rd, I celebrated National Trails Day with the Viewmont Mountain Biking team, who did some great work on some trails in the foothills above Centerville.
Along with thousands of other Utahns, I was fortunate to visit Bryce Canyon National Park to Celebrate it’s 100th Birthday on June 8th. Bryce Canyon has never looked better. It was a Great Birthday party put on by the good people of Garfield County with a little help from Gov. Spencer J. Cox, ThePianoGuys and the Bryce Canyon Wranglers
June 12th I joined Representative Melissa Ballard in at the Red Tree Room in SLC to discuss the I-15 expansion study with a group of independence business owners. The I-15 expansion from Farmington to SLC is still a few years away (likely 2026 or later), but it will have a very big impact on all of us. More information on this study and the final design options can be found here: Note that before the larger Farmington to SLC I-15 expansion begins, UDOT plans to reconstruct the Shepard Lane I-15 Interchange in Farmington starting in 2024.
June 13th I joined Davis County officials and Utah Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson at the groundbreaking for the Western Sports Park, a new home for athletic tournaments in Davis County. The soccer fields and existing Legacy Event Center just South of Station Park (where the county fair used to be held) will be renovated with an add-on facility for future sporting events and high school graduations. Funding for this project comes largely from the tourism taxes, not the County general fund. For more info on what is being planned check out: https://www.westernsportspark.com/

Thank you to everyone who stepped up to help during the increased flood risks this past spring! Now that those risks have lessened, you may be wondering what to do with any left over sandbags. It's important to dispose of used sandbags properly. Check out this article for more info or visit your city and county websites for disposal locations.
