Eccles Wildlife Education Center Coordinator

If you're passionate about creating opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy wildlife and the outdoors, especially birds and wetland areas in Utah, then the wildlife education center coordinator position at the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Wildlife Education Center might be right for you. You will be responsible for managing and coordinating all operations, including hands-on community engagement, environmental interpretive programs, budget and contract management, employee and volunteer supervision, as well as facilities and grounds maintenance. Staff at the Eccles Wildlife Education Center are also expected to work as a team to help maintain the grounds and facilities, including light housekeeping. Note: Preference will be given to applicants with a bachelor's degree or higher in a natural resources/wildlife management field or a directly related field and/or to those with full-time related experience. 

Principal duties

As the Eccles Wildlife Education Center coordinator, you will:

  • Manage the education center operations, including budget and contract management.
  • Maintain the center's facilities and grounds in a manner that promotes a professional atmosphere, while ensuring safe and efficient operations.
  • Develop and administer a visitor-services volunteer program.
  • Manage communication and outreach for the center.
  • Develop partnerships with community and corporate entities.
  • Help plan and conduct site-related community engagement and general wildlife learning interpretive programs.
  • Help plan and conduct training for visitor-services and interpretive program volunteers.
  • Supervise a Wildlife Education Center Programs Specialist and several visitor-services volunteers.

The ideal candidate

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in natural resources, outdoor recreation, environmental science, business management or a closely related field or 10 to 15 years of business management experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Expert knowledge of business process management, including projects, programs and strategy. 
  • Basic accounting and budget management skills.
  • The ability to professionally communicate information and ideas — clearly and concisely — both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong interpersonal communication abilities, which help build relationships among individuals with diverse backgrounds, and an aptitude for working with the public.
  • The skills and ability to develop creative, pragmatic ways to solve problems and improve processes.
  • Organizational skills and be detail oriented.
  • Expert knowledge of birding and an understanding of how the activity contributes to the economy and an individual's appreciation for wildlife and the outdoors.  
  • Expert knowledge of the established practices — and cultural norms — associated with birding and bird identification.
