Series Description:
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is one of the major disorders seen in Veteran patients by VHA clinicians. New information and recommendations must be communicated to all health care providers to keep up with the continuous updates in this field. With this knowledge-based monthly teleconference series, experts will provide VHA staff with various approaches to treatment and other relevant information regarding PTSD.
Lecture Description:
Credit/hours: 1 Credit Hour
Although most Veterans returning from deployment reintegrate into life without long-lasting concerns, a number of them will return with injuries that require medical attention. Considerable resources in the VHA have been allocated to studying, diagnosing, treating and compensating combat-related problems, including mild traumatic brain injury. Yet we still do not have a clear understanding of why a history of an event that causes a concussion contributes to lasting symptoms. Pain, particularly headache, is frequently associated with a history of a traumatic brain injury. Therefore, it is important to understand the typical clinical features of Post-Traumatic Headaches and how to assess for these headaches. Some research suggests that most if not all persistent symptoms in returning Veterans are attributable to PTSD and not their brain injury. The impact of PTSD on the clinical features of post-traumatic headaches will be discussed. Finally, this talk will focus on the pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments recommended for post-traumatic headaches and the overlaps in treatments of PTSD and post-traumatic headaches to help clinicians better understand how to best care for Veterans returning from deployment with these concerns.
