Ask your Veteran patients about toxic exposures |
|
|
At VA, we recognize and consider the effects of military environmental exposures when we provide care to Veterans. Join us by practicing exposure-informed care when you care for Veteran patients. With this care approach, providers acknowledge the role of toxic exposures for individual Veterans through communication, documentation, and support.

Ask Veterans about screening for toxic exposures
Every Veteran enrolled in VA health care receives an initial toxic exposure screening at a local VA facility. Potential exposures include open burn pits, radiation, contaminated water, and other possible hazards. Ask your Veteran patients if they’ve been screened to ensure they receive the best quality of care possible.

Be prepared to recognize potential toxic exposures
Veterans may arrive at your practice with concerns about Agent Orange, Gulf War exposures, airborne hazards, and unexplained symptoms. Be prepared to recognize and understand toxic exposures associated with military service. These are important factors that could impact their health. We offer training and education on these to community providers.
