Power Up with Pumpkin this Fall
Pumpkin isn’t just for decoration—it’s a nutritional powerhouse that deserves a spot on your plate this fall. Naturally low in calories and rich in nutrients, pumpkin is an excellent choice for supporting overall health, especially as we move into cooler months. Because it’s so nutrient dense pumpkin is a smart addition to meals for veterans managing diabetes, heart health, or weight.
One cup of cooked pumpkin contains:
-
Over 200% of your daily Vitamin A needs, important for vision, immune function, and skin health
-
20% of daily Vitamin C, which helps boosts immunity
-
Fiber, supports digestion, controls appetite and reduce cholesterol
-
Potassium and magnesium, key minerals for blood pressure and heart health
-
Beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant that helps protect your cells from damage
Pumpkin is versatile! It can be pureed into soups, added to smoothies, or even stirred into oatmeal for a fall-flavored boost. If you don’t have time to roast a fresh pumpkin, canned pumpkin puree is a convenient and nutritious alternative, just make sure it’s 100% pumpkin and not the sweetened pie filling.
Be sure to check out our next issue for a hearty and healthy Pumpkin Chili recipe that’s perfect for cozy October nights.

Request Your Prescription Refills Early to Ensure You Get Your Medications When You Need Them!
One of our top priorities is to make sure that you are always receiving your prescription refills on time.
The best tip to avoid delays in receiving prescription refills is to reorder your next refill the same day you receive your current one. This allows plenty of time for possible delivery delays by the U.S. Post Service, and it also allows VA pharmacists to check with your providers to ensure refills are available if prescriptions have expired.
There are several options for you to refill your prescriptions through VA Pharmacy:
1) Refill Online
Access your VA.gov (https://www.va.gov/) account, select the My HealtheVet tab in the upper right, and click Refill VA Prescriptions For assistance, contact the Virtual Health Resource Center (VHRC) at (520) 629-1713 or TucsonVHRC@va.gov.
2) Refill by App
Download the VA: Health and Benefits app at https://mobile.va.gov/app/va-health-and-benefits. With the VA Health and Benefits app, order refills and track your VA prescriptions.
3) Refill by Phone
Call 1-800-470-8262, then choose option 1 for pharmacy For the automatic system, press 1 or to speak with pharmacy staff, press 2
4) Refill by Mail
Mail in refill slip provided with your current prescription Write your request on a piece of paper. Be sure to include your full name, social security number, the medications you need refilled, and mail your request to VA pharmacy:
