Veteran Whole Health: Ask how surroundings might affect their well-being
|
|
As a reminder, all VA community care providers are required to complete VA’s opioid safety initiative training. This training is crucial, given the high prevalence of chronic pain and opioid use among Veterans.
Veterans come from a background that’s uniquely different from the general population. Their experiences — whether it’s the rigorous discipline, the stigma surrounding mental health issues, or the hierarchical nature of military life — deeply influence their health-related behaviors and decision-making.
To help you understand how military culture shapes a Veteran patient’s life, VA provides training that will equip you to approach their needs sensitively and effectively.
These training opportunities can give you context and perspective to help you deliver quality care tailored to the needs of your Veteran patients.

Looking for a faster way to coordinate Veteran appointments? External Provider Scheduling (EPS) can simplify your workflow and reduce administrative burden – at no cost to you.
EPS connects directly with your scheduling system, allowing VA to book Veteran appointments seamlessly – no more multiple phone calls or faxes. Each appointment includes the necessary authorization referral number.
Participation in EPS is voluntary, but the benefits are significant.
-
Participate for free: Onboarding, syncing, and maintaining your availability is free.
-
Save time: Eliminate multiple phone calls and faxes, freeing up your time for patient care.
-
Reduce administrative load: Simplify coordination and minimize paperwork.
-
Maintain control: You decide which scheduling blocks are available to VA.
Be part of the movement and join over 8,000 providers who have adopted EPS. EPS is available at 54 of VA’s 170 sites and is rolling out nationwide. Help grow the EPS network – as many as 1,000 providers onboard each week.
Our team will guide you through setup and integration, supporting over 150 electronic health record and scheduling systems. You retain full control over your calendar and availability.

When you interact with your Veteran patients, ask them to consider how their surroundings might influence their health and well-being. Factors include safety, clutter, noise, and smells. A safe, comfortable living space supports their well-being.
