Flu shot season is nearly here!

Upcoming Flu Shot Events were the topic of conversation with Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program Manager, Megan Daman, on Minnesota Military Radio this month. She shared information about who should get it and why, and gave details about Flu Shot Events that start next month at the Medical Center and Community Based Outpatient Clinics. The Minneapolis VA Outreach Team has participated in nearly 75 community events this fiscal year, none quite as big as this week’s Military Appreciation Day at the Minnesota State Fair.  The state fair reports attendance on Military Appreciation Day was 132,553. The Minneapolis VA Outreach Team connected with countless Veterans and had meaningful engagements with more than 300 Veterans, like Dennis Olson and his wife Mary Jo. ...read more

Navigating Care in the Community

Rick Doering joined the Navy in 1967. He went to training in Memphis for a year, then was assigned as a navigator to a squadron of carrier based refueling planes. About ten years ago he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. His primary care provider was just under an hour away from his home but Doering needed specialty care that wasn’t available at the Minneapolis VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic, so he started using Care in the Community. ...read more


The gift of giving became life-changing

In the bustling halls of the Minneapolis VA Hospital, you’ll often find a familiar face, clad in a blue volunteer’s vest, bringing warmth and comfort to patients and staff alike. That smiling face belongs to Richard "Rick" Skrivanie, recently recognized as Volunteer of the Month. Rick, an Air Force Veteran who served from 1971-75, is no stranger to the Minneapolis VA Hospital. Rick spent many years servicing HVAC needs at the very hospital where he now donates his time and energy.  However, Rick's journey back to VA wasn't straightforward. ...read more


Updating your electronics? Don’t throw the old away!

Dutch Schult, a local service-disabled Army Veteran and small business owner, has offered free electronic recycling throughout the month of August for Veterans, visitors, and employees at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center since 2023. Schultz volunteers his time and expertise to sponsor collections of small electronic devices which are then refurbished and donated to Minnesota Veterans through various organizations on a first come first serve basis. ...read more
