But aging can also bring changes that aren’t as positive such as poor health, social isolation, and loss of purpose. These and other factors can negatively affect mental health. As many as one in four older adults struggle with issues that affect mental health (most commonly depression, dementia, and anxiety).
What about Veterans?
Older Veterans represent a large percentage of the overall Veteran population: almost half are 65 or older. This makes Veterans, as a group, older than the general U.S. population. These Veterans gain all the benefits of being older, but they also face the challenges that can come along with aging.
Military service may contribute to mental health issues that are ongoing or that emerge later in life. If left untreated, this may leave older Veterans at risk for poorer quality of life. Some may even experience suicidal thoughts or actions.
