Raoul Schander, age 78, clutched a letter in his hands as he laid on the hospital bed. “To My ‘Bypass Surgery Team, I probably will not be in any condition to thank each of you individually at the conclusion of this ‘procedure’. But I want you all to know that I have total and complete confidence in your expertise, competence and professionalism already demonstrate(d) by all that has been done for me up to now and what is about to be completed. “My name is Jose Garcia, a 24-year U.S. Air Force disabled veteran, VA employee and a multiple sclerosis patient. When I was diagnosed with MS in April 2000, I was still able to walk and still on active duty. In the beginning, I was in denial. Twenty-five years later, I am in a wheelchair.” Soon after Garcia transitioned out of the military, his legs became weaker. He went from using an ankle-foot orthosis and cane, to a rollator, to a scooter and as of 2019, into a power chair. ...read more

Minneapolis VA hosted a Veteran Resource Fair & Claims Clinic at the  Anoka National Guard Armory. Veterans were able to discuss VBA claims, health care enrollment, burial information and more. Michael Marshall enlisted in the Navy in 1969 with his eyes on becoming a hospital corpsman. “I started receiving care at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis in early Nov. 2024,” said Marshall. “I had cancer of the bladder and had a tumor removed at a local hospital early in Sept. 2024. The care and treatment I received in private medicine was ok, but I needed a second medical opinion and the VA stepped up in a big way. At my first visit the caring treatment, concern, and help was in abundance.” ...read more.

Congratulations to Scott Plaisance, our latest Volunteer of the Month. Plaisance's mantra is simple, and it guides his volunteer work. “All you have to do is open the door and say, ‘Thank you for your service. What branch were you in?’” said Plaisance, and the socializing begins. He says that socializing with Veterans is one of his favorite things about volunteering at the Minneapolis VA. He also feels really good about being a part of the Veteran community because of the shared values that never seem to leave you. ...read more
