They served and protected our country, now they are learning about resources to protect them. Dozens of veterans from Freeborn, Faribault and Mower counties made their way to Albert Lea for a Veterans Resources Fair and Claim Clinic hosted by The Department of Veterans Affairs. Visitors got the chance to file a financial compensation claim, sign up for VA health care, and speak to multiple VA experts on anything they needed. ...read more

St. Paul tears down homeless encampment

Lam Truong, a social worker with the U.S. Veterans Administration, has spent months working with people in the camp, including an Army veteran who he said had been living near the nature sanctuary for about four years. Truong, who has done street outreach in St. Paul for more than 25 years, said the city’s approach to homelessness is unique because different government agencies and nonprofits cooperate well. ...read more


A gateway to patient safety

The Minneapolis VA is committed to ensuring a safe environment. Last month, missing patient simulation drills occurred at various times to reach each shift of duty at the medical center. Vulnerable patients with certain physical or cognitive impairments require a distinctly higher degree of monitoring to ensure they are safe from injury or harm. This exercise allowed staff and volunteers to practice how to respond if there is ever a vulnerable patient missing. ...read more

Lisa Haake, a retired special education teacher, is originally from Texas. It was her children that originally got her involved with the Minneapolis VA, where she has been selected as Volunteer of the Month.  “Both of my kids were interested in medicine when they were in high school, so we talked with some doctors and they suggested that volunteer work at a hospital would be a good route,” said Haake. ...read more

For Mark Stulz, a Marine, it was his recreational therapist Janelle Gustafson who convinced him to get on a plane and go to the National Veteran Wheelchair Games in New Orleans. Gustafson helped him get a bike so he could virtually compete in the 2023 Wheelchair Games. “I rode 60 miles in four days and sent in a picture of my speedometer at the beginning and end,” he said. ...read more
