On Juneteenth, we commemorate the end of slavery in the United States and honor the courage and sacrifice of African Americans who fought for freedom and equality. Their bravery helped shape our nation and paved the way for future generations.
VA Long Beach Healthcare System and Community-Based Outpatient Clinics will be closed observance of this federal holiday.

June 27 is PTSD Screening Day.
This brief, five question self-screen can help you find out if your feelings and behaviors may be related to PTSD. It also provides resources to learn more about PTSD and identify next steps to seek help.
“Recharge” sounds like something you do with a cell phone or other device. In Whole Health, “recharge” is very similar. It refers to sleep, rest, and relaxation, which give us energy. Our bodies need good rest both at night and during the day so we can live well and enjoy life.
Besides good sleep at night, you need regular periods of relaxation during the day to recharge your brain and body. You may think you don’t have time, but it only takes 5 to 10 minutes of rest and relaxation a day to see big improvements in your health.
Daytime relaxation improves heart rate, blood sugar levels, mood, and focus. It will even help you sleep better at night. Pausing in a healthy way can help us handle challenges with greater skill.
Taking a break can mean changing to a different activity for a little while, like trying to get some movement after you’ve been sitting. (This doesn’t mean watching TV or scrolling your phone, which don’t really allow you to relax.) It can also mean “not-doing” — stopping for a moment to notice what’s going on with your thoughts and your body.
Relaxation can include recreation — any activity you find rejuvenating, such as listening to music or exercise. Vacations can provide a longer form of relaxation, whether you leave home or not. To be truly restful, a vacation should provide time to rest and quiet your life down.
There are many great ways to Rest & Recharge! Explore what activities fit your interests and lifestyle with the Whole Health program at VA Long Beach!
