Earlier this month, the VISN 19 Innovation Specialist team hosted the Mile-High Innovation and Improvement Summit. Over three days, the educational conference invigorated interest in VA innovation by showcasing current innovation projects, holding panels on goal-alignment and 5th mission, and engaging staff in learning about innovation opportunities within the VHA Innovators Network and throughout VA.
Hosted by Innovators Network (iNET) Innovation Specialists, the summit focused on innovation and improvement projects from all over the VISN. There was a “poster garden” featuring a variety of on-going projects, participation from the Rocky Mountain Interprofessional Simulation Education (RISE) Center who shared their simulation technology used in provider education (ultrasound training tools, mannequins, virtual reality headsets), and collaboration with VA Immersive who provided four virtual reality headsets for attendees to try memory games, dexterity practice, and relaxation programs. iNET Director Allison Amrhein and VHA Innovation Ecosystem Executive Director Kit Teague joined VA Eastern Colorado’s Interim Director Mr. Amir Farooqi on a panel to discuss how collaboration among on different levels of VA is essential for resource sharing and goal achievement.
On the second and third day of the conference, awards were given to outstanding work within the VISN. The awards and winners include: Pivot Award to James Gallanos for his Community DIY Firearm Storage project, Innovator of the Year to Dr. Elizabeth Walter for her project Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Mobile Medical Unit (TMS MMU), Innovation Champion to Dr. Jon (Paul) White, and Innovation Specialist of the Year to Donnalee Burch. Truly an inspiring three days devoted to improving the future health outcomes of Veterans.

More than 500 attendees gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new Jacksonville North VA Clinic and Domiciliary. Among the crowd was the Virtual Waiting Room team. The brand-new facility will feature Virtual Waiting Room from day one, marking the practice’s first replication to a facility in the region.
Virtual Waiting Room provides facilities with a formalized, real-time checkout process that focuses on continuity of care and promotes effective follow-up scheduling. Originally developed by Primary Care-Mental Health Integration psychiatrist Dr. Sophia Monsour and her team at VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, the practice emerged as a response to challenges posed by the transition to virtual care. After positive feedback from clinicians and Veterans, the practice would enter the 2023 VHA Shark Tank Competition, where it would earn a winning bid to replicate at North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System. The Joint Commission recently highlighted VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System surgeon Dr. Daniel Hall and the Surgical Pause practice for their work reducing mortality rates in frail Veteran patients. Surgical Pause is an initiative that uses a Risk Analysis Index (RAI) to screen Veterans for frailty in 30 seconds, effectively flagging high risk Veterans so the surgical team can ensure the proposed treatment plans both mitigate known risks and align with the Veterans’ overarching life goals.
