Dementia is a disorder that may occur from damage to the brain due to injury or disease. Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) accounts for up to 70% of all dementia cases worldwide. At this time there is no cure for dementia, but researchers hope to change that by speeding up research efforts. One local resource for dementia patients is the Cleveland Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (CADRC) which includes clinicians and researchers from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (CCF), University Hospitals (UH) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU).
AD and related dementias (ADRD) are progressive, debilitating, and affect nearly 10% of VA patients. By 2033, the VA estimates the number of veterans affected by dementia will increase by more than 22%, with an 8% increase in Alzheimer’s dementia alone. Veterans’ dementia risks are higher than the general population and include Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), which can increase the risk by as much as 70%.
Researchers at the Louis Stokes VA anticipate that an ADRC at this site will help them to identify affected and at-risk veterans, and promote intervention, education, and support. With funding provided by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Institute on Aging (NIA), they have partnered with the CADRC to link this site to the national network. VA team members will include physicians, researchers, and other experts in dementia. The team intends to observe the progression of disease over time while collecting data on features that are unique to the veteran population. The Louis Stokes VA ADRC team is proud to serve veterans affected by ADRD and intends to establish an infrastructure for treatment and support.

Research Flagging Update
SOP HSP-003 Documentation in CPRS has been rescinded. Accordingly, all previous stipulations, that research records be flagged for participants, are rescinded effective immediately. A submission of an amendment or any other documentation from the study team in IRBNet IS NOT REQUIRED. An administrative package documenting this change will be uploaded to IRBnet in the next few weeks.
If your study was previously determined by IRB or RDC to require flagging of the medical record, you will receive an email by the end of the week with instructions on how to inactivate the flag.
If you feel clinicians need to be alerted to the patient’s participation in the research study, you can enter a note linked to a Clinical Warning in the Crisis, Warnings, Allergies and/or Adverse Reactions, and Directives (CWAD) alerts in CPRS. This Clinical Warning is assigned to the “Postings” section on the cover page of the patient’s medical record in CPRS.
Reach out to holly.henry@va.gov with any questions.

Study Initiation Visits
What is a Study Initiation Visit?
The study initiation visit encompasses a review of regulatory requirements as they apply to your specific study, good clinical practice guidelines, the informed consent and HIPAA documents as well as a review of how to maintain study records (regulatory binder and subject files).
The Research Compliance Office is required to perform a triennial regulatory audit of studies (human subjects' research, animal protocols, and basic science studies) and informed consent and HIPAA audits if applicable. The intent of a study initiation visit is to help the researcher avoid the most common audit findings before they occur.
Did you know that you can schedule a Study Initiation Visit with the Research Service?
The study initiation visit is available to all research staff. If you are new to research or need a refresher, you can schedule a study initiation visit today.
For scheduling or questions contact Candice Toney at Candice.Toney@va.gov or 216-791-3800 x66785.
