April is Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness (LLLDAM). This year, the APTC attended the Cleveland VA Medical Center's LLLDAM event on April 15th. We showcased our various available research opportunities and exhibited some of our innovative technologies that help restore lost sensation to both lower and upper limb amputees. Pictured above is Research Physical therapist Aarika Sheehan representing our research and also two of our dedicated Veteran research participants, Keith and John, having some fun with the photobooth!

On April 30th, the Cleveland VA Medical Center hosted it's VA Patient Experience Event Fair! This event was part of 2024 VA patient experience week during which the medical center hosted various events and focused outreach efforts to spread the word about all the wonderful services we have available to our Veterans. The APTC exhibited at the fair to Veteran patients as well as a variety of VA clinicians and employees. The APTC was featured on our local NBC affiliate - Channel 3 WKYC - in February! The segment highlighted our Motion Study Lab's (MSL) adapted exercise program for those with lower limb paralysis and showcased footage from our exhibition at the 2023 Head of the Cuyahoga Regatta, adapted rowing/biking demonstrations from two dedicated MSL research participants Kimberly Ocampo and Kevin O'Reilly, and interviews from APTC Executive Director Dr. Ron Triolo and Core Investigator Lisa Lombardo. White House Feature
APTC Core Investigator Dr. Dustin Tyler and his team from Human Fusions Institute (HFI) had the honor of showcasing their research technology to President Biden at the "American Possibilities: A White House Demo Day"! Their research participant, Brandon Prestwood, was able to demonstrate the implanted iSens system which allows him to move his prosthetic hand by thought and provides him with the sense of touch. Congratulations to Dr. Tyler and his team on this amazing opportunity to share how our innovations are helping to better the lives of Veterans!

Spectrum 1 News Feature
Vietnam War Veteran and longtime APTC Restoring Lower Limb Neural Connection (ReLLiNC) Lab research participant Danny Werner was featured as part of National Veterans and Military Families Month on Spectrum 1 News in November! He was the very first individual to receive an implanted system developed by the APTC that stimulates the sensory nerves in his residual limb providing him sensation in his prosthetic foot.

APTC Investigator Dr. James Sulzer Featured in Boston Globe
Associate Investigator Dr. James Sulzer was featured in an article published in the Boston Globe highlighting his journey in rehabilitation research and how navigating life in this field while caring for his daughter with a traumatic brain injury has given him a new and more thorough perspective on rehabilitation.

Dr. Anirban Sen Gupta WKYC Feature
APTC Investigator Dr. Anirban Sen Gupta and his research team, in collaboration with his co-founded company Haima Therapeutics, were featured on WKYC News in April! The segment highlighted the DARPA funded project to develop and test an artificial, freeze-dried, blood substitute that can be used for immediate need, such as with an injured soldier on a battle field. The final goal of this project would be to get the artificial blood ready for clinic trials.

Next month on Thursday May 30th 1pm-6:30pm in Tinkham Veale Ballroom at CWRU, the APTC will host its first ever Spring i-Con Research Symposium. The goal of this event is to provide an invaluable opportunity for students and trainees to network with each other, APTC investigators, and other multi-disciplined professionals driving forward the frontiers of research and development in translational programs. There will be a networking workshop, career panel, a trainee poster session complete with prizes for the top three winners, and a featured keynote speaker - Dr. Joseph J. Pancrazio, Professor and VP of Research at UT Dallas - who is renowned for his significant contributions to the bioengineering field!
