What is CHAMPS?
The VA Medical Center's Clean Hands Accessible and Manageable for Patients (CHAMPs) is a technology-based self-management intervention that aims to improve patient hand hygiene and reduce hand contamination among older adults. The study is an innovative research initiative focused on addressing the challenges faced by hospitalized older adults in maintaining effective hand hygiene due to physical and sensory limitations. The CHAMPs system is designed to support these individuals through a bedrail-affixed technology with verbal and visual reminders, which can alleviate the burden on healthcare workers.
Eligibility and Enrollment:
The CHAMPS study is open to individuals over 65 years of age, admitted to a medical-surgical unit, expected to be hospitalized for more than 24 hours, and able to provide written informed consent. If you are interested in volunteering for the study, please contact the Study Coordinator, Maria Torres (791-3800 extension 60999).
Compensation for Participants:
Participants in the CHAMPS study will receive a debit card with $20 at the beginning and another $20 at the end of the study as compensation.
Questions and Further Information:
For more information or any questions about the CHAMPS study, please feel free to contact the Study Coordinator, Maria Torres (791-3800 extension 60999).

Peer to Peer Space
Compliance and the Research Service would like to introduce our new “Peer to Peer” space, located in the Compliance Resources and Examples folder on the R:// drive. This is a simple MS Word document to connect study coordinators/staff with one another, to post questions or request mentorship in specific areas, and to offer assistance to others. If you are new to a type of study or process, or maybe you are about to receive your first monitoring visit or submit to a new IRB, this is your space to see who else has been there and done that and may be able to offer your some tips or walk you through a process. If you have time and experience to offer, feel free to browse requests for support or post proactively with your particular strengths to let others know you are a willing mentor. If you have specific needs, feel free to post those (anonymously or with your name) for a mentor to offer you support. Please note that this connection will only work if at least one side posts their contact information.
We hope that this will create a more connected program that can fully reap the benefits of the broad scope of knowledge and experience you all have to offer, and generate more questions for office hour discussions.
As always, Compliance and Research Service remain available for all questions you may have, this is simply an additional resource you may opt to explore.
Study Initiation Visits
What is a Study Initiation Visit?
The study initiation visit encompasses a review of regulatory requirements as they apply to your specific study, good clinical practice guidelines, the informed consent and HIPAA documents as well as a review of how to maintain study records (regulatory binder and subject files).
The Research Compliance Office is required to perform a triennial regulatory audit of studies (human subjects' research, animal protocols, and basic science studies) and informed consent and HIPAA audits if applicable. The intent of a study initiation visit is to help the researcher avoid the most common audit findings before they occur.
Did you know that you can schedule a Study Initiation Visit with the Research Service?
The study initiation visit is available to all research staff. If you are new to research or need a refresher, you can schedule a study initiation visit today.
For scheduling or questions contact Candice Toney at Candice.Toney@va.gov or 216-791-3800 x66785.
