The results of a study by Dr. Denise Sloan (VA Boston Healthcare System) showed that written exposure therapy (WET) was noninferior to prolonged exposure therapy (PE) in PTSD symptom change and was associated with significantly less attrition. The findings suggest that WET may transcend previously observed barriers to PTSD treatment for both patients and clinicians (Written Exposure Therapy vs Prolonged Exposure Therapy in the Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial | Psychiatry and Behavioral Health | JAMA Psychiatry | JAMA Network). The study was highlighted this week in the New York Times (Writing Therapy Shows Promise for PTSD - The New York Times (nytimes.com). Dr. Sloan has a history of Merit Review funding in CSRD. She is a staff psychologist at VA Boston and Associate Director, Behavioral Science Division of the National Center for PTSD.

(A planned monthly feature of this newsletter that will include tidbits about the Just-In-Time (JIT) process that may assist research offices and Principal Investigators completing JIT, with the ultimate goal of receiving ORD funding.)
August: Animal Subjects Research Review Area
For the Animal Subjects Research Review JIT area, the station should not upload or submit anything into eRA Commons JIT. All of the processing for this JIT area is being handled outside of eRA. Eventually, it will all be done from inside IRBNet. However, until that mechanism is fully functional all correspondence for JIT is being handled via emails through Alice Huang (alice.huang@va.gov). Once the secondary review is completed, Dr. Huang will submit a record of the secondary review process into eRA and approve the JIT area in eRA JIT. To allow time for the secondary review process, you are encouraged to send the protocol to Dr. Huang as soon as it has been approved by the IACUC and the applicable certification statements have been signed. There is no need to wait for other JIT documents to be ready.
For JIT related inquiries, please contact: vhacoblcsrdjit@va.gov.
- Dr. Jayanthi Sankar will be attending the Pain/Opioid CORE in-person meeting on Monday and Tuesday, September 18-19, 2023, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
- Dr. Miriam Smyth will be attending the 8th Annual San Antonio (Texas) Combat PTSD Conference October 17-18, 2023.
The CSRD Data Monitoring Committee (DMC), that provides data and safety monitoring for CSRD-funded projects, is seeking biostatisticians, neurologists, and other new members. For more information, please contact DMC Manager Dr. Tamara Paine.at Tamara.Paine@va.gov.
