Our Equal Employment Office engaged with Veterans and staff to find out what barriers they had to overcome to get where they are today.

This week’s Staff Spotlight is Evelyn Farmer, Navy Veteran and Administrative Support Assistant for VA Augusta Health Care System’s Engineering Service.

“As a recent colorectal cancer survivor, diagnosed at the age of 38, I’ve overcame many barriers especially in my decision to return to the workforce with a permanent ostomy. I now stand as an advocate to spread awareness to others, which makes this month perfect since it is also Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.”

Thank you for participating in our Women’s History and National Colorectal Cancer Awareness months, Mrs. Farmer!

Veteran story of being a colorectal cancer survivor

Local Navy vet beats stage 3 colorectal cancer, advocates nationally for others

“I believe that my uncle had colon cancer and it just never was discussed,” she shared.

That lack of knowledge was something the wife and mother of two never thought would matter.

A Veteran game of cornhole

Veterans gain confidence after a game of cornhole

Bean bags were flying recently as Veterans competed in a game of cornhole. Thanks to Store Manager Patrick Deacon, of Safelite AutoGlass, for donating the game and bringing some fun to the Leisure Skills Program led by Diana Mcmenemy-Deacon, Blind Rehab Specialist at VA Augusta Health Care System.

One Veteran, new to our Blind Rehab family, didn't think he could shoot a three-pointer. Well he did! He said later, "I can actually play this." He's been walkin' taller ever since.
