Research Health Scientist, VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System
February 14, 2023 1pm – 2pm EST / 10am - 11am PST
Program Description:
Preventing suicide is a top priority for the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Suicide prevention efforts for high risk VHA patients tend to focus on clinical (e.g., mental health) and service use (e.g., case management) factors. What has yet to be tested is an approach that targets factors in community living, as it is not only mental and physical illnesses that heighten suicide risk in VHA patients, but also their struggles with a sense of self-worth, meaning, and social connections in the community. This live, knowledge-based webinar will provide information for interprofrofessional healthcare team members on a current project that is developing a suicide prevention program based around Peer Specialists (PSs). PSs are Veterans with serious mental illnesses and substance abuse disorders trained to use that experience to help other similar Veterans.
